Last night I pulled into the garage to park the car and I heard a hissing sound coming from the back tire. F**k its a bolt. These tires were brand new in Sept of 2002 amd have almost 700 miles on them. My question is can the tire be repaired and still be safe for thr street and track or should I just buy a new one? (I hope not cause they ain't cheap) Its a Bfg kdw size 275 40 17 . The bolt is in one of the tread groves( If that makes sense?)

Go to Discount Tire and ask them. You wouldn't want your life riding on a patch, would you? They will fix it for free if its fixable.

 

Discount Tire's rule of thumb is to patch it if the hole is less than .25"...hahaha I know because I had a .25" diameter lag bolt go in my new Yoko AO32R 2 days after I got em I almost faught to replace it totally since they were used mainly for auto-x and the safety factor but the patch worked fine. Goodluck!

 

I had a local place put a patchplug in mine. They break the tire down and put a patch in from the inside that has a rubber titty that pokes thru the hole and seals the steel belts from the weather. And it can't come out.

 

Plugs generally are ok on the street. They do not work well over 100mph. DOn't bother asking how I know, but at 110mph on a warm day they tend to "get loose" and air starts to leak so you need to add some fix a flat to the plug which then sprays all around your fenders. Its pretty embarrassing.
