Talking can you guess the electrical problem?

car dies with no warning.

headlights, marker, dash and map lights all work.

battery is good.

power windows and locks do not work

tail lamps do not work although bulbs are good and fuse works perfect.

all fuses in fuse block are good as well as the fuse breakers. the acc fuse that controls the constants like power door locks is also good.

basically i've lost control of the car. can't start it, fuel pump won't prime, tail lamps don't work when the brake is on. ignition works though and so does the factory neutral safety switch on the shifter yet when i turn the key to run i don't have any of the turn on lead electrical equipment such as radio, fuel pump, etc.

any ideas? it would be greatly appreciated...

Re: can you guess the electrical problem?

I was going to say the ignition switch itself (not the cylinder, the actual switch) but that wouldn't explain the lights and such

Re: can you guess the electrical problem?

thanks for the suggestions.

the ignition works as i can unock, turn the wheel and move the shifter.

the neutral safety switch could possibly be bad but that wouldn't explain why the car went dead, if it were bad it just wouldn't restart after shutting it off right?

Re: can you guess the electrical problem?

Nope, my car died like that on the highway before I switched it to a manual. It was the neutral saftey switch. We bypassed it and away I went. After a 100 dollar tow bill of course

Grab a set of gator clips and bypass it once and see what happens.

Re: can you guess the electrical problem?

NSS going bad doesn't explain the lack of brake lights and radio though

Re: can you guess the electrical problem?

jeff, my first thought too was the ign. switch. but ofcourse like dreamer suggested, that wouldnt account for the taillights. the ign. sw. is made up of several outputs and sometimes (esp. late model vehicles) some outputs will work, and others will not. so the fuel pump wont prime/turn on at all? the pcm controls that. have you hooked a scan tool up to see if you can comunicate with the pcm? its prolly a common power or ground for all these things. but what? time to start diggin in unfortunatly.

Re: can you guess the electrical problem?

finally figured it out. after tracing everything in the interior and around the battery i dug into the engine bay. turns out there are two fuseable links of an lsx alternator. having a tech manual would have helped this. anyhow the two help to separate power to the fuse box which is still factory. this should have been noticed when only the constant fuses lit a trouble light but i wasn't thinking.

anyhow one of the two popped. for what reason i have no idea but for now all is well...

thanks for the great suggestions everyone.
