Question Where to live in NJ ?

Hi all,

moving to NJ soon and need to know the 'best' place to live.

My girlfriend needs to take public transport across the Hudson back to NY every day. Me, I will be driving my 94 TA to Parsippany every day.

1) Any suggestions on a decent halfway place that is fair to the both of us. So far I am scoping out Weehawken, Hoboken, Union City etc.

2) What highways / interstates to avoid in the morning. I hope that by living near the river and driving west I will be going against traffic. Is that wishful thinking? Is traffic just bad all over?

It appears that most apartments come with street parking. Do you think I will have a problem finding a place with garage parking? Luckily at work we have our own garage so during the day it will be fine.

Where do most of you live? What are your commute times? Any and all info is appreciated - and hope to meet up with you folks some day really soon.

I live right by englishtown, but for you, why not live in parsippany...it will probably be a little expensive, but your girlfriend can take a bus straight to the city every day.

Thanks for the reply!

Problem is that she works part time and is a full time student and sometimes doesn't leave 23rd st till 11 at night. Then she has over an hour commute to get to Parsippany (by the time she gets to the Port Authority and gets on the bus plus the drive).

We could live in NY and I can take the bus - except I have to walk half a mile from the stop to work. I tried it once and it took me near 2 hours by the time I goto the metro, take the metro, go to the port authority, wait for the bus, take the bus and walk.

I have to do that short term while I look for a place anyway, but only a couple of weeks or so (thank gosh). Citylife BAH! Give me a small country town. The trick here is I need to teach my GF to drive, buy her a car and she can do the park & ride!

Ok, I will quit being selfish. I have a map of Union City - that seems to be the best location. Weekawken seems close to the Interstate 495. I bet THAT is a mess in the morning.

Safer for you to walk a mile instead of your girlfriend at 11PM... For your girlfriends sake.. live in the city near her school.

No offense to union city, NJ members but that's not exactly the best place to be in. I'm saying this in personal experience.

Certain areas of Weehawken is decent.. as well as Jersey City.. but because your GF is at 24th Street - @ 11PM... that's just torture to go back to NJ...

The city is the best place for you to try and you can drive to NJ..

thanks folks, that is exactly the info I am looking for. Insider info that a drive by tourist like myself would not know till the lease is signed and then it is too late. Keep it coming!

Negatives on living in NJ:

-highest auto insurance costs in the US
-more densly populated than India... roads constantly at a crawl
-oppressive DMV emissions inspection system and gestapo roadside checks for rolling emissions.
-unbelievable property taxes, healthy sale tax, big income tax.
-oppressive (anti)gun laws
-front plate required on vehicle
-illegal to pump your own gas (one of only two states)

If you are looking at an inner city location, consider "parking".... it is very limited, and enclosed parking is very expensive. NJ cities have some of the highest auto theft rates in the US.

Positives on living in NJ:

-close to the shore
-????????????????????????????????

I've lived here most of my life. Nuts I guess.
