zero lash??

zero lash??

Ok, well I am confused about adjusting the zerolash for the rockers...I was looking at the Poly Lock method on shoebox's site.

It says to tighten down the nut til it stops spinning and in most cases that is zero lash....then it says to check the pushrod, does that mean to just check to see if it spins or not?...then it says to mess with the nut to find zero lash...


So is this just saying that if the pushrod doesn't spin with the nut all the way down, then back the nut off a little and check the pushrod again? And then just keep doing that til the rod starts to spin and then you know where the zero lash spot is?

Then how do you preload them as well? I am worried about not getting the zero lash set properly...

With the valves in the correct position, that is closed, check the push rod drag. The easy thing to remember to get the valves in the right position is EO/IC. When the Exhaust is Opening, check the intake pushrod. When the Intake is Closing, check the exhaust pushrod.

Do this by rotating the pushrod with your fingers while tightening the nut on the rocker until you just start to feel drag on the rotating pushrod. Now tighten the nut 1/2 turn more. Then lock the nut there.

There is also a valve positioning chart but I can never find it and I need to get something done and don't feel like looking for it. So I just use eo/ic.
The chart is like this
When at #1 TDC you can adjust the following valves:

Intake: 1, 2, 5, 7
Exhaust: 1, 3, 4, 8

Put #6 TDC.

Intake: 3, 4, 6, 8
Exhaust: 2, 5, 6, 7

Also you can do the valve adjust with the engine running but that is a pain and messy too.

Here is what my page says:
Since the poly lock is not a prevailing torque fastener like the nut used with the stock rocker and ball arrangement, it spins freely on the rocker stud. This gives you an advantage to finding zero lash. With the allen lock backed off, spin down the nut until it just stops. This is very close, if not right on zero lash in most cases. Check your pushrod for proper movement and play with it to get a feeling just how snug or loose the nut should be to obtain zero lash. Once you do that, you can just use the nut to reach zero lash and not have to worry about messing with the troublesome pushrod. This will speed up your valve adjustment.

You run down the nut until it just stops, while checking your pushrod for zero lash (as was explained earlier on the web page). Do this with your fingers and little force. If you ran the nut down too far, back it off until zero lash is correct or better yet, back it off and do it over. After doing a couple you should be able to predict zero lash by just the nut.

Preload is just a matter of continuing to turn the nut however far you wish to go.

If you don't want to use this method, you don't have to. It was just a suggestion to speed things up. Adjusting valves is not as hard as everyone makes it out to be.
