Is it worth converting to a 6 speed from an auto ?
if i started to look thro ebay for t56 would i want to take it to the transmission shop for a rebuild first?
and if ebays a bad place to look where else might i try (im a loner with no friends... unless someone in the inland empire would like an A4 cali)

but if i did my math right looks like shift points for t56 & 2.73's should be (assuming and aproximating 60" tire circumfrance)
1rs 44mph
2nd 66mph
3rd 91mph
4th 118mph
and faster then i'll ever see
Edit: and looks like at 75mph in 6th ur at 1600 rpms
pretty good gas mileage, i think my ride is running 2500 at 80mph or so

check ebay and the forsale sectionon this board. I paid 1500 for my kit which came with basically everything needed. I then bought a new clutch and pressure plate. Your local tranny shop may be able to help you also, they may have one there, or maybe know were to gfet one, go check it out. The only thing different on the console is the shifter plate. Just swap that out with an m6 one, or buy a whole new console. You could also check out www.sixonthefloor.com they sell all the parts, but they don't have used trannies (or at least when i checked) so they are a little bit more expensive. If you had all the parts on hand, and a free weekend you could get it done in a couple days. hope that helps
I bought my stuff from a variety of sources, and spent extra on those parts that I didn't want to skimp on. Got a rebuilt tranny; a new clutch, pp, and to bearing assy as well as new clutch hydraulics. Got a Ripper shifter too. All told I have about 2600$ into my conversion, but that was my choice. Others have found kits for less.
i started looking around for aftermarket parts on the t56 and i found a few that said stuff like "make 2-3 shift a breeze"

I don't know, if you buy the parts and pay a shop to do the work it's going to be over $4k. If you do the work yourself you're going to need hundreds of dollars in tools plus a lot of time. Are you guys sure it's not easier than just buying another car? You think about putting 2500 in parts, you can take a loss on your car and pay too much for another and save some money if the trans needs repairing later on. I would stick with the AutoMatic though. You will get extremly tired of shifting.

2500 seems like a lot for transmission work doesnt it?
well when the transmission starts slipping and my monthly gas bill runs close to 300$ i could use a higher gears and a manual transmission. and no i dont want a civic...
if u like ur auto then keep it, i like standard transmissions.
if i could get 20 mpg it would save me about $1100 in gas a year... and i know that 20 isnt even the best that those transmissions get. i know some people get more like 25-28 and if thats even reality w/ the 2.73 rear gears it would save me about 1700 a year... u do the math bud... after 2 years id have the whole thing paid off in unused gas

Then Why did you buy an A4 in the first place, it's just a car dude, it's not like there's only 3 firebird's in the whole world, you find new ones for sale everyday
Besides your missing my point, rather than putting 2500 in parts into it, you can use that as a financial bumper, buy another car and sell yours. yes your probably going to loose a little money but your probably not going to loose the 2500 you would have put into it, not to metion all the tools you would need to buy and the time and effort involved. Your much better off keeping the A4 for a while and keep looking for another car. Then atleast you'll have some money left to cover yourself if one does breakdown and will not have to be without a car for 6 weeks. Don't you have any common sense?

It's funny that you said "i'm going to learn everything about the auto industry before i let anyone do my work for me" It would be impossible to learn everything (but i guess you already know it all anyway).

You think your going to be able to do all this work on your own, you have never even seen this done let alone attempted it, you don't even know what tools you need. You think you're going to be able to lift and balence a 350# trans onto a car jack and jack it into place and then bolt it up?

i just did the swap, and all you need in tools is a metric socket set with a few extenions, you could get that at sears for friggin 20 bucks, so maybe before you open your mouth, since im sure you didnt do the swap, you should know what your talking about. A six speed swap was as easy as a brake job, just more time consuming.
