what are the keys doing?

the only diff i can think of is in the metal alloy. types used for high loads are generally made from a steel with more nickel content to make them tougher. if it's just for a pulley (not supercharger) then the hardware store types should work fine. crankshafts should get a tougher key though.

yea these are for the TWO keyways in the crank! one for the crank timing gear and the other for the harmonic balancer!

I would say go with the one you know is right. We had to replace them on our sea-doo once after it locked up and broke them. And plus, the ones at the hardware store might be a little different size that you can tell by looking at them.

I installed a keyed hub on my crank snout when I replaced the cam recently. I just used a key that fit. The hub it press fit anyway and I don't have a blower.
