Wing nuts on cut-outs suck!
Me and a friend both have the same issue. We have both switched to regular nuts now. DO you have any mods? We both have cc306 cams and ported heads, so there is a lot more vibration than stock. could be why they wont stay tight.
And no, i didnt hear a difference when it was almost off.

I have the same problem and keep an extra set in the console.
I do have and idea about keeping them on.
Just drill a small hole in each wing and wire them together, so you will have one single wire going through each wing on one side.
That way you can just snug them down, wire them up and then remove them easly for the strip.

Throw a split washer on there & they shoudl stay without a problem.
It's the kind of washer where it's cut & twisted a little so the ends don't line up. It helps keep pressure on the nut so it wont back off

The guy who welded mine in told me to put regular nuts on and torque them down because the wingnuts will vibrate off and I'll be driving and all of a sudden say "why is my car so loud all of a sudden?"
