Will Purple Hornies header mufflers fit, and 28x11.5x15 ET streets?

I know this is a weird combination, but they are coming off of the 1979 Camaro Z28 i have. I got tired of working on the Camaro, so i have decided to part it out, but i have Purple Hornie header mufflers for 3" collectors and i was wondering if they would fit Pacesetter longtubes.

I also have some 15x10 (i think) and 15x4 Weld Racing rims with 28x11.5x15 M/T ET streets on them i would like to put in my Firebird, can this be done and with what kind of wheel well modification?

You have two possible problems with the Welds... to fit a 15x10" wheel in the 4th Gen wheel well, you need a 7.5" backspace. Check that first. If the Welds are Pro-Stars or Draglites, you would have to grind some of the fins off the brake calipers to get them to fit. In fact, I'm not sure if the 79 had the same bolt circle as the 4th Gens (4.75") but I'm guessing that they do.

On the tires, the M/T ET Street 28x11.5-15 has an actual diameter of 27.6". This SHOULD fit. I ran a 28.0" QTP, and I had to move the rear axle back about 1/4" to prevent the tires from hitting the front metal edge of the wheel opening when the tires grew at trap speeds over 120-125MPH. The 27.6" tires should fit without moving th axle. I know my 28" ET Drags took major surgery to the rear bumper cover, but they are a bit larger than the 28.1" that they show in the specs.

Your 95 Formula has drum brakes?????

The wheels look like Draglites, and the deep dish indicates they probably don't have enough backspace for the 4th Gen.

No, i mean the 79 Z28 has rear drum brakes so i figured they should clear the caliper on the Formula. I will put the wheels on tomorrow and see if they fit atleast. I'm hoping they will because otherwise I'm gonna have to put on the two 17x11 ZR1 wheels, and i dont think i will get as good of traction, plus i will have to buy more rubber.

Ok, they dont fit. If i got about 1/4" space, they would clear the calipers, but they stick out of the wheel well by about an inch so i think I'll just buy some from Ebay. I've decided i dont want to put the two 17x11 rims on i have, they are new so if you want to buy them, make me an offer.

Ok i was looking on Ebay, and i was wondering if i just bought spacers, if i could cut/grind away my quarter panelse to fit these wheels? They have a 3 1/2" offset, so the would stick ould about 6 1/2 inches from the hub, but when i put them on, thats only about an inch past the fender. I thought it looked pretty cool that way. Any downside to doing this, has it been done?

Your description of "offset" is a little confusing.... a "0" offset wheel has the hub in the center of the rim width.... 5.5" backspace, 5.5" "frontspace" (remember, the 10" width is measured inside the bead retainer flanges where the bead of the tire sits. A 10" rim is usually closer to 11" wide, since it includes the bead retainer flange on each side). A 3.5" offset wheel would have a 9" backspace and a 2" frontspace.

A 15x10 Weld needs a 7.5" backspace to fit correctly under the fender. Here is a 15x10 7.5" backspace Weld with a 28x10.5-15W on it. The tire is just under the fender line.

With a less aggressive tire, you could probably live with a 6.5" backspace.

If your wheels stick out 6.5" from the hub, they are going to stick out 3" further than the wheel in that picture.

If the wheel sticks out from under the fender WITHOUT a spacer, I'm a little confused how adding a spacer would make it less of a problem.

And what are you planning to "cut/grind away" on the quarter panels?

Re: Will Purple Hornies header mufflers fit, and 28x11.5x15 ET streets?

I thought backspacing and offset were the same thing. Sorry about that. I was planning on cutting/grinding the lip on the quarter panel until it was flush with the wheel well, but i just checked and i cant do that since it's not 1 piece like i thought. The wheel wells are attached to the quarterpanelse lips meaning i would need ot cut both the wheel well and the quarter panel. The idea would be to get the quarter panel to have the same clearance at the wheel so that the tire would be able to stick outside of it and not catch the lip of the quarter panel.

Spacers wouldnt fix the fact it stick outs, but the Draglites hit my rear brake calipers. Rather than grinding away the calipers. i would just get like a 1/4" spacer so they wouldnt hit. I think i might just keep the 17x11 rims and cut my bump stops to get them to fit. I know i wont get the same traction with 315 street tires, but oh well.

So Mr. Injuneer, could you tell me if my Purple Hornie Header mufflers would fit onto my Pacsetter headers if i welded on a mounting flange? I mean would there be clearence for them?

This is what i have

I had purple hornies on a mild 350 in my 73 'bird. It sounded pretty good, was definitely LOUD. Unbearable though, I ended up changing to a full exhaust a few months later.

You could allways buy my random tech catback......$225

Well i have the purple hornies on my 79 Camaro, fully built 355, and it's fine with me. On my 95 formula i have an open Y pipe. Noise is of no concern, just fitment. LOL. I didnt want to have to shell out $400 for a true dual setup so i figured i would use my purple hornies instead. I love the sound of the glasspack. Thanks for the offer, buti just removed my 3" flowmaster cat back from the firebird and 2 1/2" true dual flowmaster setup from the Camaro in suit for a much louder car.

I have no idea about the Purple Hornies... I run 3" Borla XR-1 shorties on my collectors. Had 3" flanges added to the Borlas so they could be swapped out with cats.

It was sort of deafening that way, and every part of the car interior rattled like crazy. I have since added 3" pipes back to the axle, with turndowns, because the local track requires that the exhaust end at least past the rear edge of the door.

The purple hornies have turn downs, so i angle them down and out, i just didnt know how far down the collectors hung, they look like they would clear though.
