will paint hold to rusting ceramic-coated headers?

Can you paint over an existing ceramic coating on a set of headers? (assuming I use 1200 degree F paint) The headers have a lot of rust and I was just thinking of cleaning them up and painting them flat black, not worried about heat since a much of the coating is still on the pipes.

Any suggestions opinions or comments welcome.

Header paint is crap.. Thats the general consensus. For it to stick at all on your coating you would have to rough up the exisitng coating and make sure that you have eliminated ALL RUST. If you paint over rust you wil have a mess quickly. If looks arent your main concern I would remove the rust and then use header wrap.

only thing i can think about is use that POR-20 stuff. its good to 1400F. I dont know how good it'd stick to the ceramic coating though, but it'd prevent the rust from spreading.

Is por-20 just a high temp version of the por-15? Maybe I'll look into that. Just looking for a temporary fix for a year or so, I'll re-ceramic coat them nex year after the major mods..

Even WITHOUT a rusted header, you are going to have a tough time getting paint to stick. Generally you need to sandblast and "prep" the metal surface for the paint job.

Guess I'll just live with the rust for one more year the existing rust is probably better protection than removing it and painting it anyhow! Then I'll get the headers re-ceramic coated.

Thanks for the advice guys!
