Wierd starting / electrical problem

Ok, I'd been having some problems with the car wanting to start, and figured it was the battery since the car was hardly ever driven before I got it (6000 miles when I bought it a few months ago). Put in the new battery and everything seemed to work better. Since then, the trip odometer has reset several times on it's own. I think I remember this being a problem with the electronic trip, and I'm not too worried about it. Then today when I went to go to lunch the car wouldn't start on the first try. I went to try it again and everything was dead. No radio, lights or anything. Checked the fuses by the door and tried again, still nothing. Pulled all the fuses under the hood and reseated them, and the car fired right up. I'm guessing that one of the underhood fuses was just loose, probably the battery fuse. Any other thoughts? Car runs great otherwise.

Ignition Switch - on the top of the steering column under the dash. Ive replaced two of them. First one did what you described. Only it would power on the radio..until I tried to start it..then boom. No power. 2nd one went out while driving..Tach / speedo / etc would jump all over the place and then it just died on me. Symptoms.. no power to anything. However dome lights, headlights, etc worked. Just nothing that required the key to be on.

I'm not positive, but I'm pretty sure I lost ALL power to everything, not just the ignition related items. If it does it again I'll check and see if I have power to things like door locks or lights.

I had the same problem as you and it turned out to be my negative battery terminal not connected properly. I had cross threaded it in when I has put in a new battery and it backed out on me. Sometimes it would fire right up, sometimes I had to crank it a few times. I also noticed when it was loose, whenever I hit the brakes all the lights would dim and my battery meter would drop for a second.
