Re: Why do people run exhaust over the axle instead of under?

I was wondering....

I bought my custome exhaust already made. The x-pipe intersects on the passenger's side of the vehicle. Why is this? Why isn't the system symmetrical to the center of the vehicle?

Re: Why do people run exhaust over the axle instead of under?

I did not read all the post but this is my side of the story:

I did this on my 94PPM car, bullets under the car with true duals and the pipes were run under the rear end and out the back, tucked up, you could see a V of pipe from under the car, looked sweet with the aluminum cover.

Mine were run where the sway bar curves back up and when I jacked the car up from the pumpkin not problems. And I was suprised but when I jacked up one side of the car the rear end would touch the exhaust but no ill effects. But most of the time tried to lift up on the pumpkin.

I thought a long time about this and the exhaust guy suggested it and we did it and I never had a problem.

I will see if I got pix of it and post a link.....

I looked, I dont have any pix that I know of.
But he will probably put the bullets right close to the U-joint on the rear end and then he would come straight back and that should like up with the pumpkin sides. Then when they come out from the axle tubes start bending them out to the outside of the car and I had mine tucked up where the factory exhaust exited but tucked up like a V6 set up. I used 2.5" pipe.

Listen, don't be an idiot. If a hundred people tell you it's a bad idea & millions of cars have it going OVER the axel, then it's probably a bad idea.

and this is the attitude that allows inventions.

The problem with OTA is that most places do not want to take the time to do the driver side, it is a mess over there and close to fuel items. The UTA way is getting the job done in an OK way...

Maybe I need to read the post that disagree with this set up and rebuttle them.

But the ones I read I addressed and I had not problems with it UTA.

IF car is lowered then I might reconsider, but stock height should not be a problem.

Inventions usually take a GOOD idea & make it better not worse.

This is all old suff-so old none of you guys remember it. In the early 1960's "scavenger" pipes were the fashion of the day. It was a straight chrome pipe with the last inch or so flared which connected to the mufflers (which in these cars were about mid-body) and came to just past the axles underneath. They were a colossal pain in the @#$. They dragged on everything, had to be disconnected when the car was jacked up, you name it. A fashion I was glad to see go away.

I have true duals with spintech mufflers and I ran the exhaust under the axle and I have several friends that have the same set up. None of use have ever had a problem with it. When the car is on the lift the rear axle doesn't hit the exhaust or even come close to hitting it. Also I have never hit the mufflers or the tail pipes on anything going down the road. I have problems hitting my collectors. Which would be the same for everyone that has lt headers.

Forget going over the axle altogether! Just have a bullet muffler dump out before the axle and save a good chunk of weight!! That's what I did anyways...

I would say screw it all. This IS the solution. Just take your exhaust off completly. Run that puppy open heads. This way you will **** off everyone and have to rebuild your heads every 200 miles (if that long). You can rattle pictures off the wall and get the cops called on you everytime you start the car. This is also a good solution to make both parties happy with over or under, I say don't do anything. You save money, time, and pointless questions being asked.

Re: Why do people run exhaust over the axle instead of under?

The reason I don't want dumps is simply because I want exhaust tips. I think my TA looks stupid with not tips because I have exhaust outlets molded in my bumper (just like all TAs do). Does this not look retarded without tips?

Put a Formula bumper on it..... you'll be able to live without the tips.....

Re: Why do people run exhaust over the axle instead of under?

I have dual 3inch pipes with an x-pipe, running under the rear, dual bullet mufflers mounted right at the bumper cover and love them. It may not work well for daily driver cars but works great on my street/strip car. The only bad part is if you decide to swap rearends. I have had many compliments on the exhaust an noone can see the mufflers or the pipes. Later Clint
