Why do people run exhaust over the axle instead of under?

Ive seen a couple on here that had done it and it turned out good with no complaints. The only real way to do it is to make one like truedualws6 his is awsome or patriotta's. But we all dont have that kind of money. I was always planning on going uder the axle and found that the header flange would sill be the lowest point. Besides most of the scraping on drive ways ocurrs in the middle of the car because the rear wheels are lower than the front or vice versa.
I say go for it. Its only 80 bucks. Even if you did have them go over the axel you would still scrape in the middle. Or spend the big bucks and have them both routed in the stock location...that would be cool.

I have had Dual Exhaust with Borla Mufflers / 3in pipe (overkill) under the axle and never had a problem. the lowest point is when it goes under the axle/parallel with the rear wheels. Never scraped. Had this set-up for 2 years now.

I MUST see pictures of your exhaust. I want a picture so I can give it to my exhaust guy to reference to. Please provide pictures from as many angles as possible. I am going to get it done on Monday.
Re: Why do people run exhaust over the axle instead of under?
I agree, go under the axles, theres a few people here in kansas city doing it and it works fine for them. They said the only time they might run into problems if they lower their cars with maybe the sportline kit or something, but still thought they might be able to get away with them there.

Then imagine maybe 5" of spring travel... but to be fair add few inches of rubber to that.
Now imagine your 2.5-3" exhaust attached to your body under all of that..
It's gona be dragging on the ground to accomodate the movement of the rear axle OR its gona be ripped off the moment you go over any bump in the road :O

See, where I come from we have TIRES on our cars, and our tires O.D. ussually is more around 26 inches, not 16. So now lets put it into perspective, 13 inches minus the 2.5 is 10.5, then you run a three inch pipe and that is 7.5 of clearance, so you can have your 5" of spring travel and then some. I have seen more then a few cars with this setup and none have ever complained about it. I have more buddies who have complained about their over the axle duals hitting things. If I ever go to a true dual setup, I will definitly consider under the axle, if for no other reason then it has to be better flowing then with huge bends in the pipe.

I guess the reason I don't drag that much is because mine don't actually dump. They just point straight back.
Someone, please hook me up with some pictures.

I know this picture isn't the right year, but I believe we also have our rear sway's attached similar to the picture. (best I could find: http://www.mainstreamtopics.com/memb...ar%20mount.jpg )
Tires diameter is closer to 25.5" as well, less if you factor in the tires compressing. With all that considered, I would say that if you do it, it will be close.
A lot of people would be most interrested in seeing all these people you know who have this setup, if it were such a good thing, or so easy to do why wouldn't more people have it? (pics plz!)
(25.5"/2) - 1/2" Tires compressing(Low estimate) - 2" Swaybar clearance - 5" for suspension travel - 2.75" For pipe = 2.5". If you do the work perfectly, and your assuming that the pipe never moves at all.... 2.5" Doesn't sound too comforting, even if my math is off by a bit.

Dumps are fine for me, hell I only have about 2 feet of exhaust total after the collector. I would never even think of running an exhaust pipe under the axle but thats me and of course as always, its YOUR car do what you like.

YOu gunna pick up a whole bunch of dead Racoons from the road....
I havent calculated anything... but lets just say it clears the axle... What happens when the Springs compress... The tires go all the way up but the Exhaus tubing remains at the same position? meaning sticking out a few inches bellow the Cars lowest part?
Bang Bang.... Sparks and Fire works right there very close to your Gas Tank.....
It would look very funny too... all those pipes sticking out from underneath..
I'd say if the boy wants it that way.... Let him have it his way. My dad used to say... Live and Learn my little grasshoper.

Re: Why do people run exhaust over the axle instead of under?
Like I said, where the exhaust sits right now is it's lowest point. If it was going to scrape, it would have done been scraping. From the point where it is at, it will angle up after the axle.
