where would an aluminum piece of metal come from?

i installed a deutch 418 valve cover PCV oil seperater in line with the PCV line running from the throttle body to the passenger valve cover

i checked it the next morning after doing this and i found a little piece of metal stuck in the filter thing. its smaller than a staple, but it looks something like a staple. its a long round cylinder that has been twisted. i found it almost ready to fall out of the oil seperator on the valvecover side.

we took a magnet to it and it doesn't react, so we assume its aluminum.

where would this have come from? it looks as if there is no way this could have gotten past the MAF screen, and there was nothing on the MAF screen when i just inspected it. i also checked the plate on top of the throttle body and didn't find anything there.

i'm starting to think it had to have been stuck in the seperator thing before i installed it...

what in the engine is aluminum? we figure the block isn't, and none of the moving internals are, and the bearings arn't... what else could it be?
