I would talk to him about something in between the 847 and 503. I think it would be a good balance of power, driveability, etc.
That's an excellent idea, I like that.

Serious guys have run 11's with those cam only. So labeling them useless would be wrong. Will they make more power than a XE503, yes, will they run better times, yes, will you lose some low end, yes. It all depends on where you want to make your power. Everyone preaches up the XE503 because it has good low end and mid range, but I dont race in my mid to low range RPM I'm over 4500rpm the whole time. Daily driver folks would enjoy a XE503 more because stop light to stop light you wont be revving much over 3500rpm.

I have been wanting the 503 for the past 4 years. I plan on taking bolt ons with the 503 to low 12s. I just squeaked 12s with bolt ons so its certainly possible.
The 503 for me is going to be a summer DD cam that if i have errands to run or people in the car trips to take i wont hesitate. I cant say the same about larger cams. The larger cams become more of a weekend type car than a actual driver but lots of people do it but for me its not what i want.
You are right the larger cams make more power, but for someone who want to actually enjoy the car on a daily basis they become questionable. If i were building a weekend/strip car on a budget the two above mentioned cams would be on the list.

In my situation, An A4 with a 3200 nitrous converter, 3.73's, Heads/CC306 Cam... there is nothing unstreetable about it. As long as you get it tuned right, there's nothing it can't do. There is no loss in low end, because the stall keeps you up high enough. I can't wait to get my Lvl 2 Performabuilt in so I can feel what it's like to drive it without a slipping tranny!! The other one is completely done, killed it the very first day on the road last year.

Hey man you should check out hawksthirdgen parts on line they have a list of f-body cams and they describe each one. im currently doing a rebuild right now myself. Also if you get a bigger cam then you will have to upgrade your springs on your head and yeah youll have to have headers and nice exhaust system. If your just starting out i would buy the headers and exhaust, nice cold air kit, jet chip mass air flow sensor and have a performance tune done to it. This will give you around three twenty five horse power. Also if your car is an automatic and you have the stock 2.73 rearend gears you can upgrade to 3.23 gears which will give you more takeoff on the line while still being a good daily driver and good mpg. You can buy one of those complet rearends on hawksthirdgen parts for five hundred dollars.

Which is just proof that shelf cams can work well.

You should take a look at the edelbrock cam #2108 its an awesome piece. Right now your car idles at about 550 rpm with this cam it will sound a little more choppier and will idle around six fifty rpm. It will give you some explosiveness off the line and will work with factory settings. All you will need to do is upgrade your valve springs to work with the cam this is the cheapest route you wont even have to upgrade your valve train but its a good idea to even if you stay with the same ratio rockers which are 1.5 you can go with these self aligned ratio rockers. Which will free up to twenty five horse power sometimes. Go to cranecams.com and punch in this part #10751-16 they will be the Crane gold race extruded rocker arms which go right on in the factory position.

the first thing i thought of, is the hot cam kit. I know, I know, it's not the most powerful cam out there, and has been around the block a time or two, but it will give the op what he wants, and shouldn't be hard to get it to pass emissions, very driveable, and has a little chop to it. It is probably the best bang for your buck kit out there, not the most powerful, but it can get the job done.

I would go 503 all the way on a stock headed motor. Its good and choppy and has explosive bottom end power.
I got a 503 in ohio if interested man. 150 shipped like new
