What's in a bind?

Have a '94 Z totally stock with a problem. It cut off saturday and would not start saturday and today it fired right up. i let it run for about 5 minutes and then revved it up to find that it would not turn over 4000 rpms. I kept revving until it cut off, but then it would not start. Actually it would barely turn over. I gutted the cat and that didn't solve anything, took the belt off and that was not it, so I'm leaning towards the water pump. Being that the cam drives the water pump and the crank drives the cam, it's possible. It's not smoking or knocking, so it's not a seized bearing, I HOPE! No coolant in the oil, so no blown head gaskets. Took the spark plugs out and tried to get it to turn over and it barely goes and the battery is fine. If it sits for a day or so, it fires right up but begins to repeat the same thing. What's up with that car?

if you suspect the W/P, pull it and spin it by hand, a used pump should spin pretty easy by hand
