What starter for new 383 daily driver with 11:1 ?

looking for recommendations on starters. mine is the original from 1995 w/ 150K on it and it's not liking my new 383 very much. It's starting to sound tired and slower than it used to. can anybody recommend a good replacement starter that will stand up to the higher compression and last for a long time? also, i have pacesetter LT's, so want to make sure i dont have any clearance issues with the new one because i've already had my share elsewhere!

thanks !!

11:1 is no biggie. I'd just go with the LT4 starter from one of the GM parts houses.

Mindgame,

I've read a couple posts about people having clearance issues with the LT4 starter? Should I worry about that? Will I definately have to drop my Y-pipe to install it?

My LT4 starter clears Hooker Long Tubes and a Canton Racing oil pan no problem......

I use this starter with my 11.25 to 1 motor, clears everything and saves a TON of weight. GET THIS!

I got a CVR ProTorque starter from JEG's for $150. Spins the 381 fine, and the mount rotates to several positions, so you can move the starter away from headers, etc. I think JEG's now sells that item under their own name as the JEG's ProTorque starter.

You really don't need anything more powerful than the stock starter, but I seem to have toasted 2 of the stockers with header heat. The CVR has been going strong for 5 years now.

thanks for the ideas guys....

injuneer....i'm assuming this is the new "jegs" version of the CVR you are referring to that you have?

the pricetag is appealing to me as well as the fact that you burned two stockers up, yet that one has been working for 5 years. i too believe my headers might be pushing my stocker to its grave. couple questions...with the one you have, do you think i would have any clearance issues during installlation? I have Pacesetter LT's with matching Pacesetter Y-pipe. also, do you think the starter heat shields are worth considering?

thanks again!

I've never had a problem with the stock starter. I'm also running an 11:1 383.

Re: What starter for new 383 daily driver with 11:1 ?

I had no choice with my current setup to find a more compact starter because after my Kook's stepped headers I had no choice.

Summit Racing has a good selection of starters on display and I bought the smallest one they had THIS ONE

What surprised me was that it weighs 6 lbs and it only weighed a little over 2 lbs less than my stock starter.

Even with this very small starter...it barely fits.

With my JEt Hot LT's the smallest starter csr makes fits fine, the next step up bearly fits, also the csr starter is like 6 pounds as well. i am very happy with their products.

well, the thing is, i'm still using my stock starter now and it obviously fits, right? so i guess as long as the replacement is the size of the stock one or smaller, i would ok?

which is the smallest CSR of this bunch that 'BlackScreamingMachine' is talking about?

Looks just like it. The JEGs/CVR starter is not light-weight at all. It weighs maybe a pound more than the stocker, even though its smaller. I guess its the extra windings and the gear reduction.

Injuneer.....

Cool.....what about the heat shield stuff? You mentioned burning a couple stock units up because of header heat. Do you think I should spend $25 and put one on the new unit?

If you have a good stock starter, use it. I see no point in pointless "upgrades". I guess that's redundant, but you know what I mean. If you need a new starter, I have used Powermaster for years and have never had a problem. They are a little cheaper than the comparable CSR.

I'm running 12.0:1 in my solid roller 383 and my Autozone LT4 starter turns it over fine. It sounds cooler than an LT1 starter too.
