what are the signs of a starter going bad

I think I may have one. Do I need to drop the Y pipe or is does it wiggle through somehow?

Oh one other thing. I thought it may be the battery so i took it to autozone and it tested out bad. I bought a new one and popped it in. On the first attempt to start I get the click sound again. All light on dash work. Volt gauge reads out good. Second attempt it started up. shut it down, restarted after 2 cranks, repeated 3 x and all times it started. It does take about 2-3 cranks to fire up. Maybe its not spinning fast enough?

Is the ignition turning over and the car just isnt firing up?

I was having some problems like this and I thought it was my ignition. Come to find out it was a bad fuel pump. Not enough juice to start the car! Good thing my warranty covered it.

Whats happening is I hear a click ,click sound like a loose batt terminal. I than turn off key and reattempt to start up. After a couple of times of this it turns over and starts. But I've noticed that it takes a few more cranks than usual to fire up. Some times it will start right up and than sometimes I go through this scenario.

sounds like the starter, I just replaced mine and it was a very tight squeeze to get out, I'm pretty sure you ahve to drop the y-pipe on an auto car.

I suppose you could test the starter solenoid by going from a battery directly to the starter motor. Most likely a bad solenoid or bendix, but might make you feel better to know before you drop the starter.

Just take all precautions, so as not to run over yourself, i.e. use the buddy system.JMHO

The starter could be pulling to much amperage? Anyways if you do have to change the starter you dont have to drop the Y pipe, but you'll have to take the bolt out of the oil pan that holds the tranny lines on a bracket, and you'll still have to position the starter in a certain way to get it out.
