MAP Sensor (Manifold Absolute Pressure) Measures the air pressure in the intake manifold. Changes in engine operation and speed will affect the MAP sensor reading, which the computer uses in fuel and timing calculations.

Dont know about the Collector gasket...

I had a MAP sensor go bad a couple of years ago.....My car stalled as I slowed down at stop lights and when ever I gave it a little gas, it would stall. Under full throttle it was fine. Dealer wanted to :

1) Replace exhaust manifolds for $850(symptoms were as if the exhaust had a leak).
2) Replace CAT
3) just plain out bend me over backwards!!

It probably won't run very well with a true MAP problem. Check the wiring and the connector first. A scan tool would be helpful, as well.
