What are the odds of the optispark seal leaking?
What are the odds of the optispark seal leaking?
The old optispark seal was somehow permanently stuck to the timing cover so it had to be pried off piece by piece with a razorblade! I tried as best as I could to get everything off but there is some residual pieces left over.
I put the new one on and torqued down the optispark. So what is the chance that it will leak oil?
Do you think I should have put some ATV sealant around the edges or do you think the heat from the engine will mold it around any imperfections?
Thanx, Rob

You mean cuz I did not use any sealent when I put in a new seal is the reason why I keep flooding oil into my optis!!! So exaclty where do I put the sealent around edges of the timing cover where the seal fits into? Then simply press in the new seal.
Ya know, I was wiggling the waterpump spline shaft and it looked like the seal had shrunk a little. I guess I should expect a leak from there as well.
If I take the timing chain off, it's just going to snowball. With my luck I'll end up tearing the oil pan seal as well...

As long as you installed it correctly it should be fine. That is unless you cut grooves into the seal surface trying to get old on off.
The red/green 'paint' on the out side of the seal is actually a type of sealant
