What makes a car ping all of the sudden?
What makes a car ping all of the sudden?
I've noticed for the past few days a mild pinging at a low rpm. You know, like when you slow down to say... 30mph on 3rd shift, and you try to accelerate, and you hear a ping.
My car has never done that. It may be bad fuel, but I also want to know of any other possible causes so I can start checking things out.
Plugs, wires, opti are less than 3 months old. It feels like it may be running a little bit lean. Any ideas?
Thx-Goose

Take a look and see if you notice any blue smoke at the tailpipe.
Oil getting into the combustion chamber will casue detonation.
Also, take flimsy piece of paper such as a well worn dollar bill and hold at next to the exhaust pipe opening so that it would cover the opening if the car wasn't running.
If it sucks the paper inside the tailpipe (hold onto the other end so you don't lose it!) then it's a strong indication of worn rings, which is one way oil can get into the combustion chamber.
Of course, all those other ideas are good too.
