What kind of paint for 12 bolt?

I just received my Strange 12 bolt and am ready to paint it. What kind of paint did you guys use on your rears? How did it hold up? I know there was a thread on this a couple weeks ago (we need a different msg board search tool....something that will find partial matches!) but couldn't find it.

Thanx
Joe

I would high suggest getting the housing powder coated. I just had my 9-in housing powdercoated a week ago and it looks killer.

Powder coat would be killer, but will cost $75 or so i guess, and you cant do it yourself.

I would think some type of engine enamel would work well, with a few coats of clear over it to protect it. Dont forget a rustoelaum (Sp???) base coat.

Go to the Por-15 website I posted and look at the starter kit. It gives you everything you need to do the job for $15 including rubber gloves and paint brush. The amount they give you is pleny to do a rear end. This stuff is awesome and looks great. Its easy to apply and it will keep your rear end looking great forever.

Powder coat???? I personally would not recommend cooking your fully assembled Strange 12-bolt at 350degF....

Try the POR. When I got my Strange, I washed it off with TSP, and applied some black Rustoleum to the tubes, and a DupliColor "Hammertone" silver to the center section. Looked great, but now 3 years later, there are lots of signs of rust. Maybe some primer and a better grade paint would have lasted longer.

Strange, with paint

And another

Hey Fred, if that rust gets to be too annoying, we can work out me picking up that rearend from you so you don't have to hurt your eyes.

I've never used POR15 but it sounds good. I used Engine Enamel on my brake calipers, which see a ton of dirt/dust, etc., plus high temps, and it has held up fine--if I had clearcoated them, I know they'd look even better.

Go with the POR-15. I used it on my Strange 12 bolt back in November, and it works awesome. For 15 bucks, the starter kit will cover the entire rear and then some. I went right to the POR-15 headquarters, where their showroom is, since they are only located about 20 minutes form my house. I cleaned my housing with some Metal Prep, to get any grease off of the surface, let it dry a few hours, then put the first coat on. I let it dry overnight, then applied the second coat. After the second coat was dry that afternoon, I installed the rear. Just to let you know how durable the stuff is, I have jacked up my car several times from the rear, and the jack hasnt even made as much as a mark on it. If you go with the spray paint, you will be sorry, it will rust in time, depending on the climate and conditions you drive your car in. Go with the POR-15, you will kick yourself in the *** later if you dont.
