What is this hole?

http://shbox.com/1/aux_oil_port.jpg

whats the hole above the 1/4" NPT?

I use the 1/4" NPT with an adapter for oil, whats the one right above it though?

Im pretty sure mine on my car is open with no plug, so is there just threads there and its a closed hole, or what?

Clearly the "bunch of gunk" was not limited to just the hole.
