what to do to get my Z back up and running.

Currently, once my Z runs for a little bit and the oil warms up, the oil pressure gets closer to 0 while idling. I don't drive it like this. The engine doesn't make any knocking sounds, but I think it may be a spun bearing, some people think it may be the oil pump. I just don't know yet. Question is, lets assume spun bearing, is there any possibility of getting my engine back into shape with $1500? I would like to get more hp while I am at it. I have longtubes that were to be installed but the engine started the whole oil pressure deal.

Well the first thing you should do is get a mechanical oil pressure gauge and be sure that you factory sending unit is not faulty. If the mechanical gauge does read low oil pressure, then putting a new oil pump in with a white spring might resolve your issue and is something cheap to try prior to ripping the motor apart. How many miles are on it? As far as cost to refresh the motor, someone else will need to chime in as I am in the process of pricing that out myself.

Good Luck!

I replaced the factory sending unit, with the same results. it has 104K miles on it.

I would stil verify with a mechanical gauge and then replace the oil pump. After that, you may be looking at a rebuild. Someone else may have better ideas.

It would be close, but could possibly be done. Worse case scenario I would say a machine shop could prep the block, recondition the rotating assy, supply new rings/bearings/freeze plugs (installed) and you would have to assemble it on your own. It also depends on whether or not the block would need to be bored and if the stock pistons could be reused.

I had dreams of supercharing it, but the escalating price has squashed that, I'll sink that kinda money into my house. How about a 383? or 377? much money? I'll get a mechanical guage and test it, I believe I have too connected it near the oil filter?

i can get a block bored for 112, get a stroker kit, bigger pistons, new rings, HIGH VOLUME oil pump, new oil pressure sending unit, have the heads resurfaced. it will cost more than 1500 but its worth it if ur really in to cars.

$1500 isn't a set in stone amount. just wanted to see. I am determined to get my car up and running again with some power. I am into cars, esp my Z. I thought High Volume oil pumps were not needed and may cause problems, and high pressure pumps were the way to go?

High volume uses stock pressure just moves a lot more oil. High pressure speakes for its self. they are high volume.

If you buy high volume oil pump, and use stock pan, your gonna suck the pan dry and spin bearings. Use standard volume unless going with aftermarket pan.

not necessarily true i have a friend that is running the m155hv pump on a stock pan spinning 7100 rpm and shooting a 275-300 shot at his 383 and has for the past couple years without any issues
he just uses a higher capacity filter and thats it
i also run one on the stock pan with out any issues

as for the rebuild you would be cotting it close but its doable
locally to bore a block its 20 per cyl
and if you change the pistons figure another 20 per cyl to swap pistons onto rods + the cost of the piston
and after that balancing would be HIGHLY recomended and usually runs 250 or so
plus rings and bearings
and another 65 for cam bearing install
and get good bearings clevite are good sealed power not so much
durabond make good cam bearings as well
then add gasket prices , filters and oil for break in
yeah you should be able to make it
