Wet inside bellhousing area

I just started on my clutch change tonight. So far I've only got the car jacked up, driveshaft, electrical plugs, and clutch cylinder out.

I've got a couple questions....

Is the shaft on the end of the clutch cylinder SUPPOSED to flop around when you take it out?

It's also wet inside the bellhousing. All I can see right now is through the hole where the clutch cylinder came out, but it's pretty wet and gooey in there. Not really on the clutch itself, but on the tranny side. Not sure if it's tranny fluid, or oil from my intake leak seeping in through the bellhousing somehow...

Yes, also, in order to blead the system take off the master slave cap, give the rod a few pumps (facing down) then let is gravity bleed

And as for your bell housing being wet inside it could be a number of things, a few some to mind: Intake Manifold, Rear Main Seal (which if I were you would replace when clutch is out), OR rear of your oil pan.

Hope I helped. Good Luck, my trans is still out of my car from 2 weeks ago when i took it out, still waiting for some toys to come in. If you need some help or are stuck email me NVetro@nj.rr.com

I'd check out the goo inside that bellhousing when you get it off. It could be tranny fluid leaking from that seal on the trans. When I did my rebuild, I saw all that goo in there, figured it was from the rear main, and just cleaned it up and bolted it back up. A few thousand miles later I was redoing my clutch again b/c that trans seal leaked all over the clutch and toasted it. So basically if theres gooey stuff on the trans side, make sure to replace that seal while its off just to be safe, since it sounds exactly what happened to me.

Good luck

The same darn thing happened to me!

What a waste of time and money to finally replace a crummy $5 tranny input shaft seal.

With the rear main seal; I was thinking about changing that out anyway, as long as it's not too hard to do (insurance). Do you just pick the old one out and press in the new one? It's a one-piece right? Or do you have to drop the oil pan?

Same for the tranny seal?

I've been burned many times in the past on this old motorcycle I've been restoring over the years on $5 seals I decided to pass over, so I don't plan on doing that with my car...

Thanks for the input!
