Weird problem with rear hatch
Looking at my car yesterday, it looks like the rear hatch has shifted over to the passenger side. There is a large gap on the driver side (like 1/4"), and the other side the hatch is almost butted up the body. The hatch still works. Has anyone else had this problem or any suggestions on how to fix it.
i had this problem on my 99 under warrenty they said thier was nothing wrong it came from the factory like that. i called them a few choice words, actually it was a lot of choice words that are banned from this sight. then i decided to go into the showroom and turn away alot of buisness. i left came back a few days later and told them to fix the problem. they gave me the same crap so i gave them the same crap. they had me removed by the police. i left it alone for a while and well a punk hit me in his altima. he was doing 72 mph or so ( according to the police report ) and i was stopped at a light. he pushed me into the car in front of me and i bounced off of that car onto a jersey barrier. it was kinda scary. i was r.s. i got out to kick this little punks *** when i noticed his face was broken open across the window\steering wheel\top of motor. it was all a bloody mess. it made me happy for about a min or two until i looked at my car.
well anyways three weeks later i got it back from the shop and my hatch was straight again. the car never ran right afterwards but it was pretty

Same problem with my 95. Its been like that since i've had it. I took it a few dealers to get the low down, and was told they come factory like that and some are worse than others. Its almost like the hatch moves sometimes the gap is bigger than others. Just one more F-body quirk. I was also told, while questioning about the hatch gap, to observe the 5 and 1/4 oval exhaust tips that come on older WS6 s and a lot of trans ams. The right pipe, while standing behind the car does not stick out as far as the left. This has been true on all the cars i've seen except for one that the guy said he had the pipes straightened.
I think Eds Z28 has it down i think its a shift cause mine moves a little back and forth.

Grab the rear compartment lift window panel (hatch), while it is open, with one hand on the left side and the other on the right side and see if it moves on its hinges. If it does, properly reposition it and remove the headlining trim finish panel to gain access to the hinge nuts. These nuts will have to be tightened while the hatch is in the proper position.
If all fasteners are tight, the hatch may have been sprung while closing on something that was above the height of the lid jam. If that is the case you may be able to pull the lid toward the side of the larger opening by force with your hands to place it where it should be. Be careful not to stress the hatch, as it is the carrier for that BIG rear window, and you DO NOT want to have that replaced.
You should check one other thing. The latch may be out of adjustment and therefore causing the hatch to pull to one side when it locks around the receiver on the lid. Check this by closing the hatch to the latch without locking it. Observe the hatch as you press down on the spoiler to see if it ***** off to one side while it locks into the latch. It can be adjusted with the three bolts securing the latch to the body. Good luck!
