Weird gas smell through my heater vents?

When i turn the heat on i smell gas very strong. I dont see it leaking from anywhere on the car just when i turn the heat on it smells realy stong. Also my gas mileage sucks aswell 8 mpg. This is on a bolton lt1 . Anyone have a idea what is causing the smell? Car has new plugs, wires and 02 sensors about 2 months old. Thanks

Check the vacuum line to the FPR for wet fuel.

For "leaking" injectors to produce a fuel smell, they would have to be leaking at the O-rings in the fuel rail. Check there for wet fuel, at the top of each injector.

If memory serves, the charcoal canister is behind the left rear wheel in the well. The vent is behind the LR wheel on a bracket. The vent serves as a kind of check valve so it can easily be checked with a slight vacuum.

From my experience, when the EVAP system leaks in the back, you will smell fuel in the cabin only when the driver's window is down. I've had the vent tubes rot, crack and leak, and it smelled pretty bad. But it never came out the heater/vents. That's why I was suggesting something in the engine compartment, that might flow into the cowl vents.

The problem with the rotted lines, which is a common problem, is that they are on top of the tank, sandwiched against the body.

Re: Weird gas smell through my heater vents?

The problem is the FPR as was suggested earlier. My friend just got a 1994 van the other day. While driving it the second time, it started doing exactly as yours did. The smell inside the van was so bad, others thought he had fuel on his clothes. Then it died and would not restart.

When we got to it the next day, we cycled the key a few times and the fuel pressure regulator vac line was high and dry. But I couldn't get a hose to suck on it. When we put a little more fuel in it and cycled the key a few times more, fuel came out the vac line connection of the FPR.

I suggest if you still have the problem, pull the line and apply vacuum to the FPR manually. I think Fred was right on the first time he suggested it. My friends Ferd van proves he's right.

One last thing. Not only would your mileage be bad, the engine should be running bad too. Plugs are fouled. You need to smell the oil on your dipstick soon too and don't drive it if you smell fuel in the oil.

His oil was a quart high with fuel. Had to change it 2 times.
