Guys I am going to be running the cc306 cam and I was wondering what valve springs you guys suggest. Also some that are easier on the pocketbook. Thanks

don't skimp on the springs. You could be asking for trouble

Re: Valve spring ?s

Comp recommends the 986 springs, 740 retainers, and 10 degree valve locks. If you plan on going with a bigger cam those springs won't do any good. The CC 987 spring is a step up, but not necessary for that cam. I had the 986 springs, but I changed my mind on the cam I'm getting. I have 978's now, they're a really good springs. All springs I listed are dual coil. The 986 and 987 will run around 90 bucks, the 978's are about 130.

So 986s would be plenty for the cc306?

Re: Valve spring ?s

Would the same retainers and locks work for the 987 springs? I bought a set of the 987s and just wanted to make sure. Thanks

One is advised to refer to the Cam Card for spring pressures and installed heights. Then look for a spring that will work either with stock seats or machined seats if you have the heads off and are having them worked anyway. JMHO

Yeah, I was going to run a 233/239 w/ .569 int and .577 exh. I bought the 987 springs w/ titanium retainers and locks. Lloyd did the work and set the springs up. Now, I am stepping up my cam choice and will be going with the bee hive springs and retainers, so now my new springs will be sold w/ the cam. I am not sure with the 978 springs but my 987 had to have machine work to the seats.

Re: Valve spring ?s

i have a brand new set of 618s for sell for 50 bucks plus shipping, if your intrested. they are more than enough for the 306, but yet you could run stock lifters.

there 130 on the seat and 360 open at a 1.850 install and you will need comp 4771 seats and 730 retainers. i paid over 100 bucks for them from cmotorsports.

they are also a dual spring.

The 987's do fit with out machining the head. You just have to trim 1 corner off the seats. My buddy has been running 987's with out machining for 20K+ miles.

After looking at my heads, I can see why you can get a way with notching. It seems they interference is minor and has something to do with the boss for the valve cover bolts. It sure looks like the notch required would be small.

Re: Valve spring ?s

Getting jus the springs i thought were matched for my 233/239 cam cost me close to 1k and 4 bent valves 5000 miles down the road. So off the with the single springs, and on with the comp dual 978's. 250 bux for the spring pocket machining.
