Unable to reach high RPM

Hi everyone,

Recently I have noticed that my Z can't get above about 3500 RPM
I've heard people mention valve float, could this be causing it? If so..what is it? Or is this a symptom of my optispark getting ready to buy the farm? If anyone has any ideas that would be great..I'm kind of at a loss.

I would say your cat is plugged.Take it for a good ride and look at the cat. converter. If its glowing red, theres your problem.

Re: Unable to reach high RPM

Update:

Took the car out tonight for about 10-15 minutes, got home and NO signs of either cat being red (97, so 2 cats). However, when I was under the car looking for any redness, I felt LOTS of warm air shooting out from near the passenger side bottom..like RIGHT behind the tire. It also sounds like a little tapping/tipping..could I have an exhaust leak? I can also hear my fuel pump whining at me if I accelerate, but its been like that for a while.

So I guess it is narrowed down to: Optispark, Fuel Pump, Exhaust Leak?

Hows the fuel and air filter...The fuel pump is easily tested, but I wouldnt do it without a good filter. Then look to the opti.Thats about all the possiblities.

Re: Unable to reach high RPM

The air filter is a K&N unit with about ~3000 miles on it, and I replaced the fuel filter about 1500 miles ago. Time to test fuel pressure and then the opti?

Re: Unable to reach high RPM

Good friend of mine was racing a T/A, with his 94 z auto. Shifted first at 5700, second the same, then third went to just below and woudlnt climb anymore. He pulled over and we checked it out, smoke came out from under the hood, lots. The shop said all the valves were ****ed. Perhaps your floating some valves, hopefully not. Could be your opti. My last opti did the 3500 trick, but it stumbled up past it. It didnt just come to a complete stop, it would spit and sputter, then roughly rize above 4k. Our .02 can narrow it down, but it is a good mechanic that will make the final decision. Id hope it was the opti or pump or filter if i was you. My buddy is still waiting for his engine to be rebuilt. Good Luck

Ack @_@ well..there hasn't been any smoke from under the hood or out of the exhaust so hopefully that is a good sign. I hope it's just the opti..I can't get it past 3000 in ANY gear. I just hope its not something super expensive (opti labor is free for me since my friend is an ASE certified master mechanic who agreed to help out), lord knows thats what I need now.

Re: Unable to reach high RPM

Quick update:

The car will rev to about ~3500. I didn't try to get it over that much, as it seemed like it was bogging to get even there (from 3000 on up) However when I do this, might electronics stop working briefly or dim in power (CD player stopped working, headlights dim noticably).

Anyone have any ideas?

Stop before you damage something. Check your ignition system start with the coil, and move on down to the opti. Check plugs, wires, etc.
