Transmissin I/D question...

Ok, I have the early 95 OBDI A4 Z28...what tranny's were available for this? Is it only the 4L60E? I've heard that it could be the 700R4 also, or just plain ol 4L60...I looked for some kind of identifier when my car was up on a lift at the exhaust shop when I was doin the !cat, the only #'s I could find on it was M30 or something like that they were about 1" letters...dunno I'm confused here, I'm not a guru when it comes to tranny's... thanx in advance fellas...

(It's a crappy t-storm day here and I dont have to work, so look forward to ALOT of posts from me today lol)

You have the 4L60E. M30 is the RPO code found on your door denoting the fact that the car came with the 4L60E.

A 4L60 (notice no "E") is the EXACT SAME THINGS as the 700R4, and was only available on 93 models.

You have a 4L60E PWM lock-up unit

BTW a 4L60 and a 700R4 are NOT exactly the same trans The 4L60 has many HD parts the 700R4 is missing and a Aux Valve body

PWM?

Also, isn't the 4L60E kinda junk? I haven't really heard anything good about it (although I don't know much about it anyways)

How much HP/Trq can it handle?

If you think 4L60Es are junk, you should take a look at some Ford AODs.

Some stock A4s have been known to handle 450+HP, while others crap out on stock power levels or sooner. It depends on how well it has been maintained (transmission cooler, shift kit [mechanical], fluid changes, etc.).

I don't think mine has a shift-kit on it..the previous owner had done a few mods to the car, but I only found reciepts for the flowmasters ...it shifts pretty firm though when I get on it a little, when I ease into it I can barely feel it shift, if at all. The guy before me put 3.73's in it (yet to be officially confirmed, but my speedo is off and while pacing myself next to my friend at 60 mph I was at 3000 RPM's in 3rd, showed 80 mph on my gauge), could this tear up the tranny sooner?

how much of a stall can I put on it also?

Thanx for bearing with me on all this guys, and for all of the help!

Put the car on jackstands (rear) and put it in neutral. Count the rotations per driveshaft/wheels, and you can figure out the ratio relatively easily.

A 2800 stall has been a proven performer on an otherwise stock car with your mods. I'm going with a 3600 personally.
