K&N Filters

question... I bought a K&N filter for my 1996 GMC Jimmy... OEM replacement.. I went from 17MPG to about 22MPG.... so Now I put that filter in my 96 camaro... I am already seeing a little throttle response and better gas mileage... so my question is...

Does the K&N package (replaces air box and all) is it that much better? the OEM replacement is like $40 and the package is $210.... just curious..

The throttle response is in your head. Unless your original air filter was totally clogged...I can't imagine it adding any noticable power. As for the mileage, if you can produce the +5 mpg over say a couple months then I'd say the filter was worth it. But $40+ for a filter that produces little to no gains...not worth it.

As for the K&N package...worth it. You replace the restrictive factory intake with a free-flowing unit that can be dyno'd to produce power. I know I saw somewhere where they dyno'd before and after just the filter and saw 1 HP gain...over 5k RPMs.
That $40 is better going toward the intake.

In summary, filter...somewhat waste. Intake...worth it.

I'm in total agreement with importkiller, just the filter will likely do nothing but the whole cold air kit (K&N FIPK) really livens up the V6, especially in my 3.4L. I'm sure it's not putting down an extra 10% hp like they claim but the throttle response is greatly improved and the car really pulls harder in the higher rpm's. Again it's not going to make you run 13's but it does make the car more fun to drive.

If you only do one mod to a 3.4L, I'd go with the K&N kit.

cool.. I have the 3.8... not lookin for more hp or throttle response.. as they are nice but im looking for better gas mileage..

my daily round trip is 100+ so nice to get good gas mileage.. I have also seen the light on how to get better gas mileage.. Im getting 23mpg now...
My bud has a TA that he gets 28mpg... that 6 speed is aww so nice.. so hopefully by next summer there will be a camaro ss with a 6 speed in my driveway...

at 70mph I turn about 2200rpm when my bud with his 6 speed turns about 1200-1400!!!

Oh, yeah if your sole concern is gas mileage I don't think the kit will be that much better than just the filter by itself. I didn't notice any significant improvement in mileage with the kit.

i noticed better milage when i did this. I would have to say the fipk intake with my flomaster exhuast really put a spark in my car. last long distance driving i did, around 320 miles, i got 32 mile to the gallon.

Wow that's impressive especially for the a4. I was running the same mods(fipk w/flowmaster) but I didn't notice any crazy imrovements like that, 32 mpg is better than a civic. Maybe I just wasn't watching that carefully?

And again I know this wasn't the threadstarter's question but in terms of a power gain the fipk is an incredible/must have for the 3.4L.
