Trans Temp Gauge.12v to ignition switch
Trans Temp Gauge.12v to ignition switch
It says on the instructions to connect main power to the ignition switch.
Does that mean any power source or the ignition switch inparticular. If it is the ignition switch, where can I find it.Thanks

Re: Trans Temp Gauge.12v to ignition switch
you should need to pick up a 12v source that is hot only with the key on for the gauge light. That can be found in multiple spots under the dash. I usually just tie off the back of the headlight switch. You will alos need a constant 12v power source that can be found either under the dash or you can plug into the interior fuse panel
Re: Trans Temp Gauge.12v to ignition switch
Just check you fuse box for a power source that comes on with the key and tap into that or look for a open unused spot in the fuse box that would do the same. It is a good thing to have one of those to keep an eye on the trans temp. Don't be alarmed at what it will get up to during normal driveing conditions. I have one in my truck and it has saved me more than once while playing in the mud.
Re: Trans Temp Gauge.12v to ignition switch
In the fuse block at the end of the dash, there is a rectangular opening, with a spade lug in it, marked "IGN". That is "switched" 12V power, protected by the fuse nearby. Put a 1/4" female connector on the end of the wire and push it on the spade lug.
The exact location varies by year, and the Chevy fuse block is upside down compared to the Pontiac fuse block, but mine is where the orange wire is connected in the picture:

Head light switch? The switch that turns the headlights on.Take out the little switch and run the hot and cold off of that.Correct.Which ones hot and cold.
Constant power source? Where in the inside fuse panel can I find that. Were can I get a ground after I connect the power to the fuse panel.I bought one of those fuse connectors to get power a wire comes out and you connect it.I still need a ground though. Thanks

Yes, you can run the bulbs and the gauges off that connection.
This is really basic wiring stuff.... any metal screw into a metal chassis part is grounded and you can verify that with an ohm meter if you aren't sure. You need to do a little bit of this stuff using some small amount of thought and logic.
To find which terminals of the headlight switch, or the panel dimmer switch are "hot" when the lights are on, and off when the lights are off, use a voltmeter and figure it out. I poked around and found a harness connector near the headlight switch, that appeared to be pre-wiring for the fog lamps (which my Formula doesn't have). I tapped into that connector, after verifying that it turned on and off with the lights. All my stuff was hooked up by looking at it and figuring it out.
Seems like you're making this an awful lot harder than it needs to be.

Re: Trans Temp Gauge.12v to ignition switch
Well after a hard fought battle,I finally finished the Gauges.I took it out for a test drive and at idle the vaccum gauge reads 22 in and goes down to 8-5 at WOT.If I just cruise along and drive normally the gauge will stay at 22.The trans temp subsided at 150* and took a while for it to get there. In the instructions it has a ground wire in the middle terminal and says to ground near the sender.I grounded it to the body w/ a sheet metal screw. If I took the ground off the body the gauge would shoot over to 150 and when I put the ground on it would function.I don't have that much experience wiring a car up,but after today I have a better understanding what it takes to wire things up.I guess you have to do it.What else can you do w/ a vaccum gauge beside check for vaccum leaks or proper vaccum and supposedly use it to save on gas.The guy at autometer said the higher the number the better the gas mileage, and I believe it cause at WOT it drops down so much.I think it's mostly just common sense but it might come in handy on the highway.
Thanks for all the help guys.
