Timing set options
Timing set options
I will be installing ported heads and a Comp XE 224/230 soon. One of the few parts I have yet to purchase is the timing set.
I know a lot of people run the LT4 Extreme Duty. However, I would prefer not to pay $280 for the timing set. I know the Cloyes is $80....will this need anything other than some clearancing done to the timing cover? (I already have an electric water pump).
Are there any other options besides the Cloyes double roller and LT4 ED?
Thanks

Re: Timing set options
I'm using the PROGEAR TR series chevy small block single roller set
PN 732HDSTR
This set was recomended to me by several competent local engine
builders. It required no clearancing on the cover in my application.
I believe Bret Bauer prefers this brand. I'm no the on the model he uses tho.
Mine cost me $45 from a local engine shop.
They have different models for this application that can go
as high as $250 if I recall correctly.
Maybe he can chime in and shed more light on this.

Re: Timing set options
Wouldn't think you'de need to do that with a mild cam. The senesor wheel would have to go for the regular hydraulic roller sbc timing set to work. Another option to consider is the regular LT4 timing set.
Re: Timing set options
I like the Pro Gear for a non adjustable and a Cloyes Hex A Just for a adjustable since you can dial in the cam perfectly with that.
You have to do the 95+ up opti on the double roller and a electric water pump, but that should be done anyways IMHO.

Is an adjustable timing set mandatory?
Re: Timing set options
From what I understand its not likely that you would need the adjustable set.
Most come with the 4 deg advance and 4 deg retard options, and from what I've read you'd really only use the advance slot if any.
I've got a question as well. Using the Elect WP set up and the vented opti - would I need the Torrington Bearing?
From what I've read it sounds as though the torrington bearing is for roller cams which the LT1 runs stock right (please help).
Also are the billet steel sprockets really necessary?
I've tried many resources looking for good answers on the sprocket materials hardening ect. and have come to conclude that there are no good specs or comparisons (weight, rotational mass - friction loss, chain strect, tooth wear, ect.) on the commonly available sets.
Thanks

Re: Timing set options
Matt,
I've got a Lunati chain on my new 355. The chain was sloppy when I installed it, and I had to go with a Cloyes oversized bottom sprocket.

The chain is part number L3193094 and the sprocket is part number S505
