Time for a cam....I don't know jack about cams

Alright, it's time for a cam swap this spring but I don't know which cam to get. I've done searches on this board and others but everyone has a different opinion so I'll give you the details of what I want.

1) I don't want to rev the engine much past 6000rpm. I need it to last for100,000 miles at least, and don't race the car anyways.

2) I do most of my driving at low to midrange rpms

3) I realy want that lopey muscle car sound--like an old GTO or something. Is it possible to keep the lower powerband and still get that sound?

4) I don't drive the car much so diveability isn't overly important. It's just a fun weekend car.

What do you think?

For an off the shelf grind I'd go with the XE224/230. My buddy has it and its a damn good cam for what you want. Your wants are very similar to mine except for the lope thing. I just go a custom cam from BRE thats supposed to do just all that. I just got it installed but i'm gonna break it in before i hit the gas and see what it can do.

You don't have to break in hydrolic roller camshafts.

Yeah i understand tha,t but it makes me feel more comfortable to let it "break in" before i hammer it. I want to drive it for a little bit then change the oil. Then I'll hit it hard. It also helps me keep my sanity. I know if i got done doing the cam swap and i run it hard and it spins a bearing immediately i might go on a rampage. Now if i baby it for a while and i break it later, i might have the patients to fix it. :P

You don't have to break in a roller cam.... just go beat on it.

Checking the oil is a good idea, make sure that your swap didn't introduce anything into the motor.

To me it sounds like you want a stock cam with new springs and higher ratio rockers. That'll do everything you want. To get a decent lope just set the idle RPM much lower than stock.

If you do get a cam, I would keep intake duration under 220@.050 and run a very tight LSA.

CC305 is a great all around cam. Give us a call at 204-955-4896 and we would be happy to discuss your application and give you some advice.
