Mine is 2 turns out. According to MSD, turning it in is supposed to advance the timing.

Regarding the timing adjustment, it's almost as if the guys who desgined it weren't aware of the large number of LT1 owners that have custom programming. Also, wouldn't any adjustment be compensated for in the PCM?

No, because it's a mechanical adjustment. The computer doesn't know where the distributer is set. The only way you can tell if it changes when you adjust it is if you have a timing pointer on the engine and actually shoot it with a dial-back timing light.

So.....does that mean if we have a custom tune that it will not affect it unless we mess with the screw?

That would save you from constantly re-flashing the PCM if you wanted to run race gas and more timing at the track, but pump gas and conservative timing on the street.

I could only go 3/4 turn in and about 1.5 tunrns out so the turn range is not quite as large as they say. I can't say about the actual number of degrees of timing because I don't have timing marks.

Jeff
I haven't checked the range on mine, but it definitely wasn't 2 turns out when I installed it. The second quote is from another thread here which sounds more correct.

Good luck with that. I wanna know how a guy can change the timing w/o pulling the opti out. Flashing a PCM only takes 3 minutes compared what it would take to mechanically advance the timing.

The MSD opti has a provision for varying the timing without removing it.

I'm a '93' guy and mine runs damn fine...in the wet too.

Now if only my rear-end worked this well...I'd be out cruisin'.

As has been stated, the MSD unit provides for timing adjustments on-car. It looks like it would be a bit of a pain to get at the adjusting screw, but not impossible. And with the number of people on this board that have fried their PCM during a re-flash... I'm sure some people would prefer to use the MSD adjustment to switch from "street" to "track", especially if they were doing this on a regular basis. Plus, the MSD doesn't require a laptop/cable to adjust timing. I think the timing adjustment is a feature some people might use.

Re: They DO exist!! (MSD Opti)

Guys. The real use for the timing adjustment is when you mechanicly advance the cam shaft. you can then dail the opti in where it belongs. back in the day alot of testing was done by some of the big tuners and they always came up with a few more HP if the opti was dailed in with the crank instead of tring to be fixed in the programing

That for us will be the biggest use of the dail. basicly a set it and forget it dail
