Is there a way to get SES code without a scanner?

If I remeber correctly, theres a way to cycle the key and have the SES light flash a certain # of times to reveal an SES code. How is this done? NEED HELP ASAP because I may need to order a new opti.

TIA

Short answer: NO. You will need either a scan tool or code reader. I presume yours is a '96. If you can get it to Autozone, they can pull the codes.

Flashing codes only works on '93s. Get it scanned @ autozone.

Re: Is there a way to get SES code without a scanner?

Problem is that my car is dead. I can't get it to autozone. It started misfiring under load last night, then just died at a traffic light. It stalls out eveytime it's under load (4th gear in low rpm's) and barely starts. It threw a code while doing this.

I think it's the opti, but i replaced the opti less than a year ago. My other thought is that it might be the coil. I just want to be sure before I order the new opti by having it scaned, but I really dont want to spend the money on a scan tool.

The only way to find out the code is with a code reader or scan tool. Do you know anyone who has either? If you have a Harbor Freight Tool store near you, they sell an OBDII code reader for about $50. That's the cheapest I've seen one.

Re: Is there a way to get SES code without a scanner?

Hi. I live in Denmark, and nowhere will they show me the codes unless I let them fix the car as well. Do I have to buy a tool? Where can I get it cheapest from the web?

Has someone made Software and a cable for a laptop, or do I need a whole diagnostics tool?

(SES comes on under full acceleration above 90 mph, goes away after a few days)

Yes, you 1997 OBD-II PCM can only have the codes pulled with the proper scan tool.

The Harbor Freight OBD-II scanner is now down to $40. That is the cheapest one I have seen. A local auto parts chain store, Pep Boys, recently had an Actron OBD-II scanner for $50 after mail-in rebate.

The devices above are "code scanners" ONLY. They will pull the Pxxxx diagnostic codes, and that is all. You could get full scan capability software from AutoTap:
