temp. questions

hello, I have a 1996 SS camaro and maybe 5 months ago the water pump went out and I had that replaced. (did not replace thermostat) and ever since than it has been running right ni the middle of the temp guage.. somtiems a lil above the half way mark. Before the water pump was done the car ran 160 - 180. My mechanic said no way they never run that low.

So my question is what temp is normal? and if im high how do i fix this problem. If it helps my electric fan comes on but never really cools the engine off... and sometimes it blows hot air other times cold. thank you for your help i REALLY appreciate it.

If you have a stock tune in your PCM the fans should come in at 226 deg and the second stage at 234 deg.

Could be that your old w/p had a 160° thermostat in it and when you replaced the pump, it might have come with a 180° (new GM pumps come with a 180° installed).

Normal running temp with stock thermostat will be ~195°. It will go up to 226° when you sit in traffic until the fans come on. That's about the middle of the gauge.
