my car does the same thing, the temp will get pretty high and then drop when the second fan hits. im going to install a water temp gauge to see if my stock water temp gauge is working right.

Please don't start a new thread on the same subject as one you've already got going. You can "ttt" the original post to the top if you've waited 24 hours and did not get an answer.

If you interpolate between the marked temperatures, the middle line is 210*F, and the 3/4 line is 235*F. If the gauge reaches the 3/4 mark, both fans should be on. The fans are working correctly.

The question would be... why is it running hot enough to require both fan to run a lot?

Do you have the correct "LT1" style thermostat in the engine? Have you filled the coolant system correctly and carefully bled all the air out of the system? Is your radiator clean and operating at high efficiency? Is all the radiator baffling and sealing in place? Is the air dam in place? Have you checked the fornt of the radiator for leaves or trash? Are you sure the water pump pdrive shaft is installed correctly? Are the hoses rigid and not collapsing? Is the cap rated at 18psi and holding pressure? It the coolant level staying at the very top of the fill neck?

My Formula never got past the middle line, even sitting in traffic on a very hot day. It ran cooler than that at speed. You shouldn't be seeing the 3/4 mark except in unusually hot conditions.

A 160* 'stat will not prevent it from reaching the 3/4 mark.... it will just allow it to run cooler if you reprogram the fans for lower on/off temps.

injuneer were ur fans hot wired or programmed to come on before the 3/4 mark, or did u get a different fan switch/sensor for the fans to kick on early from ur formula

My Formula was bought new, and had a 160* t'stat and reporgrammed fan temps within the first year. 14 years later with an additional 525HP, I'm still using the same t'stat and the same fan temps. The only difference at this point is a Griffin aluminum radiator.

Angry camaro and firebird fans

injuneer are the fans of the camaro and firebird different i think they are programed differently because i used to have a v6 camaro and my fan came on at 3/4 of the temp gauge..and likewise with my Z28 i have now it turns on at 3/4 too. ur formula which is a firebird, the fans come on at the middle of the gauge. i have a friend that has a 3800 V6 firebird he told me his temp doesnt go past the middle just like urs. so wat im thinking is are the fans for the firebird and the camaro are programmed differently?? thats wat my conclusion is and i wanted to kno wat do u think. thanks man.

I have a '96 Formula. When stuck in slow moving traffic, or at a stop on a hot day, the temp will climb almost to the 3/4 mark, then the fans come on and it cools back down.

The stock programming for the LT1 fan on/off temps is the same, whether the engine is in a Camaro of a Firebird.
