I never bled my system either, but as mentioned above, the protection of your optispark(distributor) is very important. That goes for replacing the water pump or thermostat as well which involves the risk of coolant soaking the opti.
Maybe some confusing terms being used. To protect the Opti from a coolant bath, drain the radiator below the TB coolant connection level. After you have the hoses reconnected to each other, fill the radiator back up and bleed the air out of the cooling system.
