Taller Tires on the Back?

Hi everyone, I am a long time reader here but have never posted. I have a question and have searched the forum without getting a straight answer.

The car in question is my dad's 95 6-speed Camaro. He has bought some 17" rims and wants to put a slightly taller/wider tire on the back (285/40 vs. 275/40). Can he do this without causing ABS/TCS problems?

Thanks for your help.

I doubt it will make any difference at all, nor will it look any different, nor will it make any difference in traction. I can't imagine why he'd bother.

Check the tire specs in regard to diameter of the two tires. I doubt there is enough difference to bother the ABS/TCS.

Thanks for the replies guys.

I told him the same thing, I don't understand what the appeal is. He has slicks for the track anyway! But it's his car, and his choice I guess.

As for the differences in diameter, it will be 25.6" vs. 26.0". I have always assumed GM makes some allowence for different heights, like if you had decently-worn tires on the front and brand new ones on the back, the question is how much is the allowence?

Just wanted to bring this back toward the front, a lot of people probably don't come here on the weekend.

Anyone?

After this, I'll let it die. Promise.

Most 285's have considerably wider tread than the same brand 275's. With the BFG's I am using, the 285 has nearly more than 1/2 inch more tread width. The 285/275 combo makes sense to me, that's why I use it. The 285 will put the speedo off by a few percent unless the PCM is reprogrammed. There will be no problem with ABS though.
