T56 guys.... How easy is it to accidentally tap it into R instead of 5th??

This has never happened to me in the eclipse, or any other mt car i've driven... its a 5 speed so 5th gear is no problem to shift to... (just slam it over all the way and up..)

However, with the 6 speed... If I rev through 4th, cross over too far to the right, intending to throw it into 5th... I'll be in reverse... Probably drop my tranny out on the freeway or something...lol...

Has anyone ever done this accidentally? Is there some protection against this, or do you just get a feel for it?

Yes.... there is a "reverse lockout" solenoid that only allows you to engage Reverse when the car is stopped.

Reverse is locked out once the car is moving forward atleast 5mph. So unless your lockout soleniod (sp?) is broken I wouldn't worry too much. Its never happened to me

Oh and getting the skip shift eliminator won't affect the functionality of the reverse lockout i'm hoping?

Correct..... skip shift and the reverse lockout protection are two completely seperate systems.

I *kinda* did that. It's true there's a reverse lockout, but IF you push hard to the right you can get it to move over. If I remember right it will start grind even with the clutch in as you try and push it up. FIrst time I did it I thought I had lost 5th gear, but it was just me being overzealous and being a dumbass.

What I don't get is why ya can't shift 6th to 5th, have to go down to 4th.....

There was probably something wrong with your tranny... I could shift from 6th to 5th without any problems...

Really? Damn don't tell me I got more stuff wrong! Everything else seems to have worked right. Ah well Maybe if I FORCED it into 5th it would go, but I didn't.

Although getting it into reverse isn't possible at speed, it is possible to do a 3rd to 2nd shift. Causes a slight increase in RPM

Hey dave88lx, i have the same problem with shifting from 6th to 5th. i cant remember if it was always like that and just realized it a few months ago, or if it happened due to abuse. I think its the 5th gear syncros, because it will go in if i double clutch (depress pedal, place in neutral, release clutch, blip throttle, depress clutch, shift into 5th, release clutch) going from 6th to 5th. Since that works i'm thinking that it's just the syncros. Maybe someone else can shed some light on this if its not the case. Its not that big of a deal, but just one of those little annoying things that will bug you forever.

You should not be able to engage reverse over 5 mph due to the reverse lockout solenoid. However, if your 5th gear synchros go out, you can get to reverse. I'm speaking from experience.

Whoever was having the trouble downshifting from sixth to fifth, that's the fifth gear synchros. Again, from experience.
