synthetic oil

My engine has a 108k miles on it and does leak oil apparently from the oil pan itself. Would yall suggest using synthetic oil in the engine for now on or stick with regular oil or would switching cause any issues?

If it's already leaking than synthenic is only going to make it worse. There's nothing wrong with using good quality regular oil. Just keep up on the oil changes.

Why don't you just fix the oil pan leak?

Oh I plan to but I have to have money to do it with first since I cant lift the engine and get to it myself. So in Febuary when the van is paid off I am going to replace the oil pan gasket and front and rear main seals provided the compression and leak down checks test out well. If the compression and what not doesnt check out well then I will just have the engine rebuilt.

LT1 leaks most from intake manifold

We all have leaks- especially when using synthetic. Toward the back of the motor the intake gasket is poorly designed and the mating surface is uneven. Cronic leaks are endemic to this spot. On this board are many descriptions on how to fix it if you must, because it is up high the hot oil drips down and it often appears to be a lower gasket - say -pan gasket, that is leaking or rear seal seems wet. hen the real culprit is higher up.... It may be those lwer gaskets, also. But our pan gaskets are better desighned and the mating surfaces are more uniform, easier to reach and have been perfected over 50 years. It is easier and cheaper to just change the oil on schedule than try to stem the flow. If you do not mind the driveway mess and garage floor mess...wait until the engine needs a major repair or you plan an upgrade and do it all at once.

If the compression and leak down all checks out great I wont be rebuilding the engine for a while. So Ill get the oil pan gasket changed and the front and rear seals just to make sure the engine is sealed good with no leaks. Other than a slight ticking from the lifters or valves and a slight rough idle the engine runs well. Well other than sucking gas like no tomorrow. If I dont have to rebuild it for another 100k miles then Ill spend my money fixing up the rest of the car.
