Swapping heads, cast iron to aluminum

Will the aluminum heads of a trans am work on a impala Lt1 with cast iron without any modifications?

Re: Swapping heads, cast iron to aluminum

They will work fine, but if the heads came from the 94 TA they will flow LESS than stock Impala heads even the best lt1 F-body heads only flow as well as and not better than the irons, so unless you are having them ported don't waste your time and even if you are porting them irons respond very well to porting too. Aluminum is not a magically better material as some would have you believe either. You need to take a step back in your research and before wondering if they will fit find if they are of benifit. Stock for stock at best it would be a wash if 95 or older aluminum castings you would be putting on a lesser head so it would be a step backwards. There are better places for info on making a b-body fast than this board, they are a different car and need things done a little different.

The cams shouldn't be all that different. The impy cam is probably geared a little more towards low speed torque than the f body version. As far as the heads go, which is better, a head that flows 5% more air, or a 40lb weight reduction from the front of the car?

Aluminum
·Lighter
·Tolerant of higher compression
·Easier to port
·Easy to repair
·In ported form can support 550rwhp+

Iron
·Better thermal efficiency
·In ported form can support 550rwhp+

Re: Swapping heads, cast iron to aluminum

The cam really comes down to the application, the b-body cam might make traction a huge issue instead of the just big one I am sure it was before, peak torque for the b-body cam will be a bit higher and at a much lower rpm. The f-body cams make their torque at a higher rpm hence the higher HP rating since HP is calculated from torque x rpm = divided by 5250 = HP.

I would not trust the stock b-body springs to control the f-body cam, heck with a few miles guys have reported valve float as early as 4800rpms with the stock b-body cam, so if you swap cams adress the springs if you keep the b-body heads, CM sells a great set. Really though why not take this opportunity to mod, something mild like the ZZ3, 845, or Crane 227 would all be fine with a stock drivetrain and all make more power than either of the stock cams. I drove a ZZ3 cam for awhile with 1650 stall and 2.93s in my boat of a car and it was just like stock at low throttle, then keeps pulling to a higher rpms, you could easily get away with more cam than that.
