Re: surging with stall converter

I really don't know much about tunes or stalls. But from reading the info, wouldn't it be better to set your idle at about 800-900rpm (since this is where it seems to surge too).

Re: surging with stall converter

I've always wondered about raising the idle but raising it past 900 made me feel uncomfortable being that normal idle rpm is around 650. To test the TPS sensor you would need a voltmeter and a chilton manual or something. Shoebox may have some info on his site. The TPS sensor is a relatively cheap part to replace. I got a replacement from Kragen for like 25 bucks.

That won't help. Mine was already at 900/950.

Re: surging with stall converter

i believe your going to have the pcm idle adjusted , i've personnally never had it done but i've worked on a lot of problem cars, the pcm is going to raise the rpm when put in gear, with the higher stall converter the rpm is probably going too high and the pcm is trying to adjust to a stock converter spec, imo

Re: surging with stall converter

I can not beleive this can not fixed I too am having nthe same problem with my car, only when warm, it idles high cold and is fine, so it tells me something maybe a miss in the open loop closed loop B.S. not to kean on it just seems to be temp related but caused by the stall converter.

TTT C'mon CamaroZ28 Lets solve this and get some smooth idles back people think I have damn cam when it is basically stock!

Re: surging with stall converter

Not really important but, I have a west coast converter (3200) and NO problems. Maybe it's just certain cars, or I got a very good built converter. I had it custom made it cost me $425+ shipping and WELLLLLLL worth it in my opinion.

**EDIT** I remember he told me to count the pins the transmission cable had. I think he said some had 12 and some had 13, he said I needed 13 or I would need to buy a part (at a local parts store). I think he called it a pulse something or another I really can't remember. Maybe this has nothing to do with it............maybe it has everything to do with it. I don't know, just trying to throw out some ideas. Hopefully someone else can clearify this alot more than me.

Re: surging with stall converter

Anyone figure this out? I'm having the same problem...

I think since there's more slippage, it = more RPM per TPS %, so the PCM drops the spark/RPMs to adjust. Just an idea?

Re: surging with stall converter

I have a vig 2800 and seem to have this problem as well. I did have my idle very high on my 52 BBK like 1000 on the tach or so and it didnt' seem to do the surging thing but had to keep foot on brake as it was pulling the car too much in traffic at cruise speed. I backed down the idle speed and the surge is back. I recently bought a new tps and new iac to install but doubt they will help. I also currently have bad vacuum leaks on my 52 bbk from usiing stock tb gasket with it..the 52 was used and figure would be ok for awhile with stock gasket until my new 58 BBK came in which is supposedly today. See how the car runs with no vacuum leaks but it still was doing the surging with the stock tb.
It seems to be a sideeffect of the stall converter and it seems like someone above posted maybe to get rid of it you have to set the idle so high that you have other problems. I wonder what would happen if you unplug the iac and
set idle with idle screw. It seems when I had the idle too high on the bbk screw the iac was not reading any counts anyway so it wasn't trying to compensate. The car did seem to have a steady idle. What happens if you don't run the iac and just use the tb screw? I may have to experiment a bit.
