car on jacks, plz help, fuel filter replacment question

Let me start by saying that im a pretty good do it yourselfer. The last time i change my fuel filter was about 2 years ago. Today, i decided that i was going to do it the same time i was taking off my wheels to give them a really good cleaning. So i changed my wheels and began on the fuel filter. When i got the filter off, i noticed a black plastic piece and a yellow and orange O ring on the ground, under the filter. What the heck is this? It appears to need to be on the male end or back end of the filter but i don't understand how it goes on. To make matters worse, the two O rings are broken from trying to figure out how it goes back in. Has anyone else experianced this? I checked shoeboxes website as well as other threads on the forum but i couldnt find anything. I asked the guys at Checker Auto Parts but they didn't have a clue. I went to the parts store to pick up new O rings, but apparantly they are too big. I'm on my way back right now and ill be checking to see if anyone respondes. Thank you in advance for any input.

Are the o-rings from the old filter or new filter? What vehicle are you working on?

im working on my 93 camaro z28. I think they are from the old filter cuz its worn. The yellow one looked newer. Im not sure where they came from because they were on the ground when i found them. Got any ideas? I just got back from the parts store with what i think is the same size rings. Thanks for the reply

Re: car on jacks, plz help, fuel filter replacment question

Well, i spent the whole day doing something that should have only taken 10 minutes at the most. It still hasn't been finished. I inserted the O ring into the fuel line, then the black plastic piece, then the fuel filter itself. It still leaks badly. I scared the inner part of the black plastic piece while taking it out to put the O ring in first. Everything seems to snap together well, but because the plastic piece is scared, fuel leaks through it. If anyone knows the part number or what its called plz let me know. Unfourtunatly the fuel is still slowly leaking into a gas container as i write this.

How hard is it to chang the fuel line from the tank to the filter, or is it possible to just change a section of it? Thank you!

The only o-ring listed is on the threaded end of the filter. GM PART # 22514722

Yours is leaking on the quick connect end?

shoebox, thanks for your response, yeah, its leaking from the quick disconnect end, it appears that there is a O ring and a circular black piece that is in the plastic housing of the quick disconnect part. Somehow it must have fell out and no matter how i try to put it back in, it still leaks alot of fuel. I'm about to go wrench on that stupid thing again.
