Re: Stupid Mistake, help?

After extensive testing via Shoebox's method, I have come to the shocking conclusion that my opti is bad.

Here is why I'm assuming such.

I ran through all of the meter testing through Shoebox's guide, and everything checked out except for the beginning tests, (the dc voltage check of A and D, which came up as like .019 and .017)

And the VAC test while the engine was cranking, and the VAC was reading at 3.14 then 2.12 then 1.4 then .60 then .58 then back to 2.44 then back below one again.

Which makes me think that somewhere the opti is shorting out and the last time I pulled the pump it just got too much water onto it, or from all the moving around and the fact that I hit with a hammer, it somehow failed.

Does this sound like the right conclusion?

If there is something I'm missing, I'd appreciate any input anyone may have.

Thanks as always!

Did you follow the tests exactly? The coil has to be plugged in for the test at the ICM connector. If you have no voltage, the test info suggests you check the fuse.

Re: Stupid Mistake, help?

Well I think I did...

The only harness I had unplugged was the ICM connector, but the coil was connected to the optispark, and the other plugs on the coil were on.

And I checked the fuse, its fine.

The 4 sockets on the coil read 9.19 though, which makes me think its on its way out as well.

Re: Stupid Mistake, help?

The voltage at A and D on the ICM connector should match your battery voltage.

Re: Stupid Mistake, help?

Yeah they definitely did not match the battery voltage.

Could that alone cause the car not to start?

Honestly I can't think of a reason that the coil or the PCM or anything like that would go out.

The most plausible idea I think is that me screwing with the opti too much and taking the water pump off 3 times and it getting drenched with coolant at least once just put it through too much.

And if you look at the back of the opti it is a Remanufactured one.

So it really doesn't surprise me that it is bad.

Re: Stupid Mistake, help?

New opti in it and it fired right up, apparently the old opti was in right but got screwed up.

But now my oil leak is 3 times as bad.

So evidently I screwed the new seal up or idk.

Does anyone know of someone on the forums selling the drive seal tool?

even if you find the install tool I would get a few seals and look for the youtube video that I referred to that the guy used a socket. There are two lips and any roll or nick is cause to discard it and try again. I didnt realize on my first attempt the importance. Then while watching video I saw how part of it was stretching it out so to speak. Thats when the light kicked on for me. I will look real fast if I have video saved and if not will look real fast to see if I can find it because I think it would help you.

Yeah I watched his video but while it was going on the larger socket it put a nick in it.

So idk were you able to use the socket and get it perfect?

I used the socket with no problem. What I did notice was I spent a little more time loosening it up as it didnt want to go on larger socket. It actually loosened up quite a bit from the initial size. I would have damaged mine had I not worked it a little more.

Re: Stupid Mistake, help?

Okay picked up the felpro timing cover set, and the water pump drive seal is currently being

"MARINATED" on a 7/16 12 point socket that I think will slide over the ever so lovely shaft.

Also since I have to remove the opti, I mine as well change out the opti drive seal or whatever it is called, you know the little one right around where the opti gear goes in.

I know when I was screwing around in that area so much that I probably put some un-needed wear and tear on that seal...

How exactly do I go about changing that one?

Do I just pull the old one out with pliers and set the other in and make it flush?

Also there is a larger seal that came with the kit but I have no idea where it goes.

Buy Felpro Timing Cover Gasket Set TCS 45953 at Advance Auto Parts

Actually after looking at it that looks like the harmonic balancer seal?
Since I'm taking the pulley off anyway, will that make the seal accessible?

Any help would be appreciated, and I'm very grateful for the assistance I've been given this far,

Thanks guys!

Re: Stupid Mistake, help?

The link posted earlier to the NAISSO forum shows how to replace all seals. The crank seal comes off like the opti seal. The crank hub must come off to replace it. Special tools and instruction must be used. If it is not leaking, I would leave it alone.

Re: Stupid Mistake, help?

What Naisso forum?
Don't remeber seeing that one..

But on mine, the size of the opti seal is the same size as the water pump drive seal.

Its not like a 2 inch circle like all the guides I have seen.

I'm assuming because mine is a 94.
