Re: Stupid Mistake, help?

And another issue...

After installing everything and letting the car sit overnight, it won't start.

It turns over and cranks and almost starts but blows smoke out the intake and left side of motor.

Did some research and I couldn't have screwed up the timing, it only goes one way.

Is it possible for an opti to be bad but still almost fire?

Or could my coil have gone out in the process?

I doubt a wire got put back on wrong, and even so I've had cars start with the wires messed up before.

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated..

Thanks!

Re: Stupid Mistake, help?

While the Opti, IN THEORY, can only be installed with the dowel pin in the correct, enlarged hole, it seems that many people manage to install it incorrectly. The most common error is not getting the pin in the correct hole, and pulling the Opti down tight with the bolts.

Re: Stupid Mistake, help?

Well the issue I was having was the opti wouldnt go in easily, so I used a block of wood and lightly tapped it in.

However I was 90% sure that the pin lined up, because even though it was a bit lose the opti wouldn't rotate.

And is there anyway to test if the opti is on wrong without removing everything again?

I read somewhere that a guy did this job and it ended up being the coil?

Re: Stupid Mistake, help?

If you hammered the Opti down with a block of wood, it's going to jam against the pin, whether its in one of the wrong holes, or just in the "clover leaf" area, and the rotor will not turn.

Not sure how you would check it without taking it apart.

Re: Stupid Mistake, help?

Okay I see what you're saying...

But would the car still like fire?

It sounds like it wants to start, but it just can't

And its blowing smoke out the intake...

If the opti wasn't on the gear, then wouldn't it not spark at all?

Re: Stupid Mistake, help?

The dowel pin jammed against the back of the Opti would turn the rotor, but if its not indexed correctly its sending the spark to the wrong plug at the wrong time.

Re: Stupid Mistake, help?

Well I found out mine is a vented opti.

So it can really only go on one way.

Like with the notch at the top..

But I just pulled my coil and tested it, all 4 sockets are reading 9.19 ohms.

That's quite a bit higher than 8500 and it is a stock GM one from what I can tell.

The one on the right is what the back of my opti looks like.

Which is why I'm finding it hard to believe something was off.

And my timing cover looks like this..

Is it at all possible that I'm like a tooth off or something?

Because this system doesnt even appear to allow that..

Re: Stupid Mistake, help?

People put optis (of both types) on wrong all the time. Yes, they are supposed to go on one way, but it is possible to get it wrong. You should never have to take a block of wood to the opti. Force it hard enough an it will go on [wrong]. You can start the engine before putting on the water pump to be sure it will run correctly.

my opti was the clover leaf(dowel pin style) and I put it on wrong once. It went into the recess of the clover leaf and was not quite going all the way in and I sucked it in with bolts. Needless to say it fired once and ran for about three seconds but then would just try and fire. Not to sound like a douche but quit beating things in to place lol. Try to realize if things dont go easy it may need a little more attention. The other train of thought is there is always a bigger hammer lol. Seriously though there are alot of delicate things that need finnessed not forced. Hope you get it all dialed in and no leaks and goin strong.

Re: Stupid Mistake, help?

Literally pulling that water pump again will make me cry..

Is there anyway I can no for certain that re aligning it will fix the issue?

And lol I know but after messing with it for 20 minutes the block of wood idea sounded good.

But I'm damn sure I got that top notch lined up, like I'm so sure...

You've got to read what people post. I already told you IN THEORY the Opti (vented or unvented - but I KNOW you have a vented Opti, because all 1995's have one ) can only go on one way. Apparently you didn't believe me. I explained that people manage to install them incorrectly by forcing the Opti down over the dowel pin by pulling it down with the bolts. You topped that one, by hammering it down with a block of wood..... wow!

Can I state with absolute certainty that you installed it wrong - no. But there's a damn good chance you did.

Good luck.

Re: Stupid Mistake, help?

Here is the sketch factor, the current opti on my car has no vacuum line or anything.

So idk what the hell happened but someone did something different.

I just got the pulley off so ill have the opti out in a few, ill take some pictures and see what you guys think.

But yes, I know I have a hitting problem, I'm working on it lol

But seriously thank you guys for the help today and previous days, I feel like ever since I got this car I've been making up for all the previous owners mistakes.
