Stiff Stick!!!
Stiff Stick!!!
Okay guys, here's a weird one. I posted this in Z28.com, so far no answer...
My car has over 164k miles on it, manual 6-speed. I noticed that my stick has been stiff for about as long as I owned the car, it is rather difficult to move the stick from side to side, it doesn't even go to the neutral point between 3rd & 4th(5th & 6th?), STIFF...
I bought the B&M Ripper Shifter, hoping to help with the stiffness, the thing is still very stiff to move around, but hey, I figured that that was how the BW 6-speeds are...
Until some of my friends sat in the car, and whined about how difficult my car was to shift.
Tonight @Fudruckers, I met Ryan, he JUST bought a 97 SS, only 28k miles for $15,000, he has the hurst shifter, I got in that car, and that thing was VERY EASY to move the stick around...
What gives???
I spoke to a mechanic over there that works on many of the 4th gen owners over here, his name is Mark, he says that maybe there isn't enough ATF oil in there, or someone a long time ago put in gear oil, and that causes the gears/linkage to stiffen up. He says that my tranny may need to be flushed out.
I told Mark that I always use synthetic oil for the tranny, he told me not to, the Borg-Warners don't particularly work well with synthetics, and that Honda ATF works very well with the 6-speeds.
Mark wasn't available, I had my GOOD friend mechanic drain & replace with Honda ATF this afternoon...
It is better, but not nearly as easy as that 97SS...
Ever heard this stuff before? It sounds pretty interesting.
Your comments would be appreciated. If you have had this happen to you, let me know what WORKED???

I do apologize for not answering your question--but at least I got your post back up to the top of the list, right!?

TTT for ya
I can't say i've heard too many guy complaining about having a stiff stick.
Either way, the Honda ATF is supposed to work good. Other than that, maybe your tranny is just starting to show its age. Mine is a little stiff as well, but I guess i've just kinda dealt with it. Good luck.

Clowns!
Hey thanks folks, I do appreciate the responses.
Maybe it is old age due to my M-6 having over 165,000 miles...I dunno...I wonder if I just have to get mine rebuilt, just get a new one...
If any of y'all hear someone who has the same problem with their manual tranny, let me know?
Thanks!
My wife likes my stiff stick though...
