Steering wheel radio controls

Did a search and nothing came up on this, Can't believe I'm the only one with this problem

On my '94 TA, it's got to the point where the redundant radio controls on the steering wheel don't work any more. Its been a gradual thing along with the radio itself taking a crap. I've sent the radio/CD player off to www.carstereohelp.com for repair.

My questions are, is it the radio causing the problem, or the button's on the steering wheel? If it's the buttons, what do I need to do to fix them?

Any help is appreciated, thank you

How much of a job is it to change the buttons and/or relays?

Usually, what goes wrong with those thing is the "plungers" that connect the buttons you push, to the buttons on the circuit board melt or something along those lines. I took mine apart to find, no plungers at all. Someone told me you can use those coffee straws you find at QT or anything along those lines to make new plungers. If you take apart the steering wheel, you'll see what I am talking about. It's not that big of a job. 4 Torx head screws behind steering wheel, undo air bag connections, then unscrew each side of the steering wheel controls. MAKE SURE YOU DISCONNECT THE NEGATIVE TERMINAL BATTERY. You don't want to be hit in the face by an airbag.

Edit.. If anyone knows the measurements on those plungers that I would have to cut the straws, PM me.
