Exclamation Steering Shaft & Header Clearance...None.

So after getting my LTs in and my tubular K-Member on, I have little to no clearance for the steering shaft to attach to the steering column. Bashing the header is out. Shimming the motor mount is out as well. I'm in need of between 1/4-1/2 an inch to connect the column side portion of the shaft. Is there a company out there that makes an aftermarket shaft that attaches higher on the column to provide more clearance? Is there some other option I haven't found in my research on here?

I saw this thread some time ago. Maybe it will help:

My kooks contact the steering shaft if it's not installed correctly. Quick fix is to loosen the shaft and smack it with an extension & hammer to push it further up.

How old are your motor mounts?

Other threads have said that you can get 1/4" to 3/8" of additional clearence at the steering shaft by "elongating" the three(3) holes in the mounting bracket, (located under the dash), which holds/supports the steering column. Don't know about getting a full 1/2" more clearence, as you say you might need, but ............. I'm sure every little bit helps!

What brand/manufacture of long tube header are you using? Others using the exact same header may be able to give you more advice?

Review this thread also: https://www.camaroz28.com/forums/sho...d.php?t=476870 and ........ Good Luck!

I guess it's safe to say that's not the problem. Did you have the exhaust setup in there before you installed the K-member. Perhaps with the new k-member it's possible the engine is just a 1/4" or so too close to the driver side.

Re: Steering Shaft & Header Clearance...None.

I'm going to have to either shim or elongate the bolts in the steering column to the firewall. Haven't worked on the car in 2 days, spent the past two weeks straight on it. Had to do some side work I promised I would. The headers are LPPs. I don't remember how much clearance I had before I put the UMI K in, I had moved the motor around some to change the valve springs so the position it was in, wasn't the final position until the K was installed. I don't see how enlongating the bolts on the column would help, it looks more like it needs to be shimmed slightly.

Take a picture of what part of the shaft is hitting the primary.
