Starter stays engaged
Starter stays engaged
I am doing a rebuild on my 94' camaro and I am about ready to start it. I had the coil unplugged and the fuel pump unplugged to prime the engine. I tried starting it twice. It turned over fine after the first time. I waited about 3 minutes and tried again and it turned over but this time the starter is staying engaged. The engine isnt trying to turn over, the starter just keep spinning. Do I have something hooked up wrong?
Also I have put in a mechanical oil pressure gauge and noticed that i was not getting any oil pressure when turning it over. Does it take awhile to get pressure. I only turned the motor over twice.
any help would be appreciated

Well I took back the starter and got another one. The first one failed the test at autozone. So i put on the other one and it doesnt stay engaged so I really dont think there is a wiring issue. But now I have another issue. It turns over for a second or 2 and the starter makes a bad grinding sound. Any ideas what that could be?
Check the teeth on the flexplate to be sure some of them aren't broken or "worn". There should have been a set of instructions included with the starter that explains how to properly measure the distance between the teeth on the flexplate and the shaft of the bendix on the starter. They should also describe how to shim the starter properly to obtain the proper measurement.
Well I think this starter is no good now either. The Bendix turns both ways and they are not supposed to right? Both of these starters were a Duralast reman. from Autozone. I have put in the LT4 hotcam kit and done a rebuild, so this motor has more power now. Do you think its possible that I have broken both these starters, now that my engine is a higher performance engine? I just find it hard to believe that 2 starters that I got were junk to begin with.
take your starter back and buy this one
part # 17124
its for a y-body but fits our cars perfect. shim it a little and you should be good to go. i can't remember the thickness i had to use but it wasen't much
